So tiny update of the positive kind
This saturday I was checking the fishing radar on tides4fishing and it was saying that there would be "high" activity with the fish but you guys know that doesn't mean they care to bite but I took advantage of the situation and took a day trip to test it out.
I got to cosway around 4ish and once I arrived it was clear that the fishing was pretty good. They were completely out of sea lice which turns out was the meal of the day for some very ugly big black drums. Now I wasn't aiming for them but those that had sea lice were just being harrassed by black drums. I can say I saw more than 10 drums caught while many others either broke off or were caught without me seeing them. I could hear those lines and drags going and hoops and hollars from the crowd that was perched up on the corner of the pier. It was about 11 or so other fisher man + family with them. I was very happy for them but I was looking for trouts or red which didn't seem to pop up yet. Took a bit of time before some trouts were caught but those drums were literally bending pools. The action was real heh reel. So the issues of people kinda started happening when you have so many people on a smaller pier. I caught more people than fish during the starting hours and not to mention don't use 1 ounce weights when the current is moving but hey everyone has to learn sometime. Fast forward to 1 am and the crowds are smaller but the drums are just as big but finally the trouts are moving and even caught a small red. What really interested me was around 2 am the water started to "pop". The trouts were literally tail slapping and popping the tops of the water. I ended up keeping nothing out of the 20 plus trouts (so many 9 to 13 inchers) I caught but wow I had some fun. I think the fish love tejano music cause that party at the corner of the pier was blasting it. The fishing was so good even the game warden showed up. All in all I think the fishing is finally picking up especially with all this warm weather hopefully. A very interesting fog rolled in that night with the trouts too and yes the water was very muddy brown. Sadly the trouts only wanted live shrimp and they ate all 40 of mine lol. The trick seemed to be free line or bobbers. I tried poppers, tops, fat boys, chasers but they only wanted the shrimps. Left around 430 am and the trouts were still having a party.

Last time I fished at one of those -was 1969, it was Red Dot, and we did well, but the crowds were too much. I have gotten close to trying Cos - since I like the folks - and I know they are a supporter here - dont think I can handle the crowds.
I have been on BHP 3 times, well 4, counting today, but i didnt fish, just looking to meet up with a bud, but the crowds werent bad at all, course the weather is in the 60-70% suck-o-meter range. But the weather WILL get better soon and pins will be great - SOON. _________________ Don - permanent prescription of salt water therapy. |

pier fishing has been a ritual with my girls since they were 4-y-o - any of the several there in Flour Bluff, Fulton Beach, South Padre.
(it was a ritual when I was growing up, too)
Ritual meal fits in there, also. Captain Benny's then Fulton Beach Pier for the two hours after sunset, catch 40 fish until the pint's gone, then ice cream; Snoopy's then Cosway.
My baby's first comment about fishing is she loves the smell of a bait shop - to this day
Or green lights in the canal if we rented a house for the trip.
Honed our tackle for it over the years. Always light/UL, because we've always used the same rig - Mansfield Mauler with 4' leader, 1/0 Kahle hook, and live shrimp - the smaller the better.
Eagle Claw glass to Falcon graphite, and the last round of pier tackle we picked up are a pair of 7-3/4' salt XUL "tetra" rods from Japan -
- these are a hoot, and I've sight-fished specs to 23" in the canals using them with 4-lb copolymer, and a blue Storm WildEye Shad.
on a couple of other threads I've mentioned our big boys Arroyo trip last Nov.
I wouldn't take the girls to the fishing shack we rented,
but you couldn't find a better set-up for pier fishing
We hauled our kayaks to launch during the day, and pier fished under the lights.
Caught these (and Many more) on the XUL
we threw back countless 14-1/2" fish
fishing spec rigs, even landed a trout/snook double (bigger rod)

http://www.arroyocityfishingcabin.com/ - we were in the Getaway
my review is on here, along with some not as glowing
https://www.yelp.com/biz/arroyo-city-fishing-cabins-rio-hondo
like I said, don't bring your wife or mother, but bring your fillet knife
and yes, I would go back
also, no boat slip
I have to edit this post - didn't see roach one, and I gave them 3 stars (have you ever not seen a roach around boat docks?)
This was my review
| Quote: | Don't bring your wife or mother here, but this is an absolutely perfect fishing shack. The shack itself was a couple of trailers with an enclosed dog-run,
a huge enclosed deck, and a Great fishing dock. Bring your own kitchen stuff, towels. Good beds and bedding, and coffee pot were the only thing
provided, and lots of room for staging and laying out gear.
There is not a good boat slip here, but if you like fishing the dock lights at night, you can get your fill of keeper trout. |
I think the guy with the roach review was an Austin prima donna.
And they're probably tree roaches, anyway.
He certainly wasn't much of a fisherman if he couldn't appreciate this spot.

'dirtiness and roaches'...... It's almost like I'm back at Rio Hondo, doing another sampling run down the Arroyo! Only thing you forgot to mention was the lime green, neon colored water that had orthophosphorus through the roof!!! (and that's not a good thing!!!).
But the fish don't mind too much. Biggest flounder to date came from there, [search some older posts for the evidence]. Won't say how it was 'collected'.....
