| This should be an easy question for some of you folks out there! Thought I'd ask since I always get way different answers from different folks on the rocks. The specific parts I'm asking about are in the channel between the jetties but I'll take any other info too. Thanks, yall are awesome. |

| I believe the ship channel through Port A is dredged to a minimum of 40 ft. I have heard Packery is only 7 or 8 ft, but I'm sure it varies. I know before the hurricane, a shallow bar had formed at the mouth of the channel and it was only about 4 ft deep or so. I saw not too terribly long ago boats doing soundings in the channel near the jetties, no doubt out of concern that the channel remain navigable to small craft. |

Port A is closer to 50 on "average".
Havent run out of Packery in a while, but there was a pretty good bar towards the end (before Harvey). It's not real deep, I can promise you that.
Are you looking to move a boat in/out of either pass, or just a general question? _________________ I'd rather be fishing |

I think the official depth at PA is 45'. Depending on exactly where I'm at it varies from 20' to 65' in and out of the channel.
packery before the storm was 5' at the mouth, it gets to almost 30' at the bridge. |

More of a question for you, Why would you want to know the depth in the middle? (Especially Port A? - That's one long cast.....). And I've dove across the whole length, when I was younger and WAY dumber..... Wouldn't recommend it!!!!
Anyways, the replies have been spot on. Port A is 50'ish in the middle, can be deeper in spots (haven't dove it since Harvey, so my old reference points are likely WAY OFF). Slope of the sides are steeper as you go towards the last 3/4's to the end.
Packery changes literally by the day. Really shallow in spots, and like pointed out, way deep near the bridge. Where the dunes blow sand, it's really shallow. At the end, there is a nice gut (North Side, hugging the rocks; again, pre-Harvey), but it's real dynamic and changes constantly.
[Secret Reveal - South Jetty, at the end, looking south at 45 degrees, 30 yards out. There is a pile of rocks that fell off the original construction barge in a Tropical Storm that is spot #1 for me when I spearfish. Shhhhh... Don't tell anyone! ] Plus it's the spot I go for when I need to replenish my tackle box with weights, lures, and leaders! |

There was a lot less boat traffic back in the day. We dove and snorkeled Port A jetties in the 70's and I never felt like we were in danger. I guess we were more bullet proof in those days weren't we. _________________ Live like you're dying |

Matt - no boat, I'm just a rock hopper and people ask me that question a lot so I wanted some solid proof, thanks!
CS - for Port A, I just figured I could extrapolate the depth of where I'm casting. Some of those redfish have inflated air bladders so they must come from pretty deep.
thanks all |
