Listening to some of the naysayers on here, I almost passed on a great trip down to pins. From what I heard, people were shoulder to shoulder all the way down the national seashore - and 1/4 mile apart even as far down as 40 miles.

I decided to drive to the island and see how crowded everything was - stopped at the convenience store - no lines, no crowd. I was going to go to packery and check it out since everything else was too crowded - but as I drove, traffic looked down from a regular weekend. I decided to give it a shot - and at least take some pictures of the crowd. There were fishermen out - a lot of them, but no big deal, plenty of room to stop for most folks in the first 5 miles, a few places where groups had set up camp, a couple that could have applied for their own zip code, but friendly waves, bbq pits going, awesome truck rigs, and awesome fishing rigs were all along. Some really cool campers , and camps along the way. The last storm did us some favors in washing away a lot of the garbage that we had dealt with since Harvey.

This picture is around 7 miles out.
I kept on , found some good looking water several places, but people were there - so I continued on to right about 12 miles.

Saw a couple of my friends but they were busy digging up dinner.

Water looked great - started catching whiting right away. It was a great drive and I am glad I made the trip.

That's the way to do it. You won't know if you don't go.
Nice write up and pics.
Thank you.

I think naysayers is a pretty strong term. Most including myself were just giving observations or pictures of what we saw. To me having to go 12 miles down the beach is more than I would want to just to try to catch whiting. Others might enjoy going the full 60 miles to do so. To each his own

Well, I will say this I was wrong. But in the past the first 15 miles is usually how we described during sharkathon. But maybe Harvey and the turmoil it brought decreased the number of participants this year. Glad you got some whiting and thanks for the report.

I enjoy fishing - whiting chose to bite - we like whiting. Some, me, have much lower standards than you , Z. Regarding the crowds, I assumed you had gone out to PINS to see what it looked like, its always crowded near bhp on the weekends.

Friendly folks, most of them, i asked a few how they were doing, compared notes with them, like others have said, hope the camp sites are cleaned up. There some very nice rigs out there. Where I stopped , lots of fish in the water as it got later, some thing was chasing mullet in the shallows , but by the time I would get my spoon rig over, they were gone. Going to keep a spoon or cocohoe lure rig on a rod holder close to me next time, took me too long to get to the car to get my lure reel out.
