Hey CS - do you still have a picture of the eel from this ancient thread? Another one washed up and I'm debating with somebody about the species. Doubting my original ID.

Caught a few of those years ago when working offshore, big ones. Had to watch out with them, they would come at you jaws a chompin.

Why is the only thing I'm seeing is an ad to update Photobucket account to view third-party posting and not a picture of said fish?

Cause after June photo bucket wants 399.00 per year to host and let you post pictures. All pictures everywhere that were posted before June now show the placeholder frame you see. You don't get your picture back until you pay the 399.

Strange, I can see the original pictures???

I got them from Photobucket and moved them over to Flikr, so here they are for your viewing pleasure.

I poke my finger in the eye of Photobucket....

Mine and the one circulating the internet are two different species. Your original ID was correct. The lower jaw tells the two apart (that and the fangs on the front of the jaw). Aplatophis chauliodus (Tusky eel) has the larger fangs and the jutting lower jaw, whereas Ophichthus rex (Giant snake eel) has more symmetrical jaws, and teeth more similar in size throughout.
The eyes are also different, with Tusky eels having really small eyes.

That Tusky eel picture making the rounds as the 'Sea Monster' gave me chuckles. Talk to any shrimper and they will vouch for this "Sea Monster"!!!! [insert dramatic music here].
