Can anyone tell me what kind of bird this is? This is the second one that's laid eggs in an open gravel area where I work in the past month. It starts chirping aggressively when anyone gets near it, and will chase you down if you get too close. Laughing I understand it wanting to protect its eggs, but I'm trying to get a better grasp as to why this species likes to make nests in gravel-y areas near roads as opposed to say a tree or bush.

The eggs are kind of spotty black and white and are a bit hard to see from far away. Perhaps a camouflage tactic?

yep...
we call'em killdee's...
a few are mistaken during dove season, most notably Little George Bush...
they do the broken-wing trick if you get too close to the nest...
but the bestest camoflager is the bull-bat( common nighthawk)
they nest on open ground, also ...
