While fishing just a bit north and east of Flower Bluff landing me and my buddy observed a very strange fish swim by.
Tan in color ... It looked something like a ray swimming on its back with its wings folding upward around its body almost forming a cone big at the head and small at the tail.
No tail like a ray or arms like a squid.
It had a pot belly that was almost orange and an arrowhead shaped head.
Never seen anything like it.
Did not think to photograph or net it.

Has anyone seen anything like this?

Before you ask we only had two beers each ... LOL.

Seen that photo ...

If it was swimming upside down ...
and the wings (thinner and more flexible) extended down to the tail ...
and when it swam wrapped around the body to form a cone shape ...
and the tail was missing ...

That might have been it ... but I dont think it was.

Perhaps a Gymnuridae? The Smooth Butterfly Ray?

That's pretty much what I got based on your description. No major orange on the belly, but it's one of the rays that lacks a distinctive tail. They are a small ray that can be found on the inshore shelf and saltier bays. It likes sandy bottom areas.

^^^ I think we have a winner.

I'm thinking 'fish', and forcing it, and completely missed the obvious.
Well done, Tyler.

Sea hares make interesting aquarium pets, but only if you have a never-ending supply of aquatic vegetation for them to eat. I had one for about three days, but then I had to release it because it ate all the grasses and plants that I had carefully collected from local waters... they never quit eating!

Prof., they can be trained on lettuce, and romaine hearts hold up well to saltwater. I've had a sea hare in a tank for a good bit of time. Really cool, but yea, they are quite hungry all the time!
