Ok guys, we have officially opened up a new trip to try this year! It is a longrange trip I have been wanting to do for a while now.
This is a "reverse" 60 hr trip (the big travels will be at night) leaving at night and returning in the morning. Tuna will be available, but more of an afterthought, as the only fishing night will be the middle one, and hopefully most will be licking thier wounds after a hard first day of fishing....
Anyway, this is my experiment in running a wahoo heavy headboat trip out of Texas... If half as good as i see the possibilities in my minds eye, i will try to schedule at least 3 of these a year (one each jan, feb, march) in the future) This is still a very limited load trip with a max of 18 on the Pelican. Regardless of the wahoo fishing we have 2 full days of fishing in the gardens area, so there will be a 2 day limit of big aj and good bottom fish... probably do a few hours of deep dropping as well if conditions will allow.
I have blocked off the whole week for the Pelican, so we have 4 different go days to adjust the trip if needed for weather reasons... please plan your schedule likewise so we have full maneuverability with weather...
Anyway the price is $1k pp and you get to bring your own food and drinks. Feel free to contact me directly, or call Deep Sea Headquarters at 361 749 5597 to book.
Also if this is a bit out of your comfort zone... we still have spots on the Dec 30 Pelican 48hr floater trip, either way a great gift to yourself for Christmas. |

I've seen pics at DeepSea Headqrt. from a long time ago where they got into the Wahoo on a long range trip and all the fish looked like toads, 60-80 lbs I am pretty sure they were trolling islanders w/ meat....
Good idea on the wahoo trip, it is nice to see some new options on the long range scene here, I think we have a jewel and a lot of people under-rate it...or maybe its just a little choppy for most, haha.
I am anxious to hear how you all do. I will look at booking when I can save up. For the wahoo, will you be trolling mostly? Casting & ripping irons? As far as the trolling gear, is that provided? What kind of trolling are we talking? I'm just trying to get an idea of how we would fish for the wahoo. Its sort of a specific way for rigging your gear just for them,
Cheers & good luck! |

Yeah, the gardens definitely stack up with big hoos this time of year. That one trip you are talking about, is still the stuff dreams are made of. I have been wanting to schedule a trip around winter wahoo for years, an am fortunate enough to work for someone that will let me schedule speculation trips.
If we are successful most will probably come on the troll, but we will be ripping jigs and bombs on the troll stops too. We have lots of trolling gear, but alot of people will probably bring their own stuff as well. There are as many different ideas about trolling for hoos, but most revolve around a mixture of swimming hardbaits with straight shooting cone heads... the specifiic combonation depends heavily on speed. Other than that, high speed, high capacity reels and wire leader are a must. |
