Tried in Alice this morning. All high fliers but a bunch in the neighboring pasture on power lines and feeding in the fields. Only two shots missed by me Rommann got 1. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

we had an Argentina type shoot today..
imagine a fat pomp or two.. on every cast...
it was off the hook, good..
never seen so Many doves in Jan...
and w/a big strong norther.. we were WAY off...
the doves were riding the front fast or "IN YER FACE RIGHT OFF THE BARREL'
still had limits and one tired lab....
way more empty shells in the dirt than birds on the tail-gate...
will be talking about these last couple days for a long time... _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

well that last post was 6mos ago...
and gettin' exited by prospects of another great yr...
really loaded w/ doves that never migrated further So. and have nested and probably will second nest...
urban whitewings stayed and rural mouring doves also...
was a lot of winter wheat harvested in May and wild sunflowers are everywhere...
this area is shaping up to have a banner dove season! _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

I found this w/ a search about planting it...
w/enough rain,(very drought tolerant) it'll keep growing and adding seed pods till it freezes _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

Sportsman, is your place east or west of I-37?
if west, you get 2 weekends in early sept.. white-wings only...(2 mourning doves)
sesame is probably even better than domestic sunflowers for doves....
high in oil content, the birds know that it adds fat for winter...and mourning doves have an easier time eating the smaller sesame...
domestic sunflower and corn are a little too big for them to swallow...
that's why milo, wild sunflower and sesame attract the mourners better
my perfect dove field would be sesame w/a scattering of domestic sunflowers and teaweed in marginal areas and a tank on one edge...
some dead mesquites to round out roosting/sitting areas..
and best news.. we go from 70 days to 90 days this season! _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

one other thing!
here in Medina and Uvalde Co's... lately, sesame is planted behind wheat which is harvested in late May... the sesame is usually ready for harvest in Nov....
that's why we had such a great shoot last winter... it wasn't combined till early Dec,,,
your sesame should be ripening in Oct, maybe early Nov and if some is left standing, the mid Dec second split should be good....
Live Oak Co is far enough S to have plenty of migrating mourning doves
during Dec/Jan _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

Stan-
Dove season has not started yet, it opens September 1st in most of the state, with the special white wing and south zones staggered later...
I'm getting pumped, our sesame is really doing well with timely rains. Hopefully the birds find it |
