I use canvas tarps, front poles, and use bungee cords for the rear tied to deep stakes. It kind of just sways in the breeze with the cords providing a 'spring' effect. Never had one blown out. Poly tarps just suck and do not let any breeze through. These 'breathe' and it helps.

You can have these custom made and they are very reasonable from these folks

Used a 16' version of this on the last trip, winds kicked up pretty crazy and it held very well. Then the rains came and we grilled sausage and fajitas on the pit underneath. I did have to tie the lines to driftwood and bury it though, stakes were just not cutting it in that wind. I'm pretty happy with it but it's only been one trip so time will tell. I had it setup as seen in the pics with 2 strong aluminum poles, but it has anchor points all over and can be configured like the one on the truck in the pic above. Grommets are strong, regular tarp would have torn for sure and this one shows no stress at the anchor points at all.

Here's what i came up with. Threw it together fairly quickly.
Worked quite well in up to 15mph winds.

wait till walmart has the ten foot ez up ones on sale for 30-40 bucks. Use them 3-4 times and throw them away. Rust is going to get them anyway.

I bang some stakes in the sand and use PVC for my framing. It has held up really well even in high winds. I eventually put a closet dowel inside the top PVC pipe to keep it from bowing.

No pics, but we have always laid a large tarp out on the sand in front of the truck. Drove the tires over the back of it and used closet rods and staked out ropes to hold the front down. The wind will hold it open just fine. The poly tarp is usually only good for a season but they are relatively cheap and fold up flat for storage.

I use the mesh tarps from Northern. They don't flap around all day and they are much cooler to sit under as they let air flow. The amount of shade is sufficient.
