I made a solo trip to some of the local rigs last Friday and found lots of fish willing to play. I have been waiting for the kings and cobes to make a return, and they finally showed me some love. Kings were not large, but that means better eating, and the cobia ...let's just say the only cobes I don't enjoy are 36 inches long. Too much danger and work to release them safely. Springtime can be a tough season to find good weather for offshore paddling, but this was my fifth trip, and the variety of fish was finally reflective of the Summer population. This should be a busy season offshore!

Since the surf was very small, I left the beach as soon as there was enough light to see

The fillet knife got a workout, and church peeps went home with a lot of fillets. Jacks and Bonita were traded in as shark baits.

I'm deployed in the South China Sea right now and i've had kings on my mind for weeks. I was just thinking the other day how the kings should be showing up in Corpus any time now. Thanks for the report, damn I miss south Texas!

Hey prof! It's amazing what you do.. makes me want to do a lot of BTB this summer. One question I have always had but haven't got around to asking is what do you think about mirage drives (pedals) and bigger kayaks for btb?

Jeff, the only place pedals are problematic is in the surf if you aren't careful. Once you're past the surf pedals are a good way to push the kayak around. Even the surf zone can be done, but you have to be careful not to break a mast on the sandbars.

Kayak stability is a more complicated matter. Wider means more stable, but it also means the boat will be harder to push through the water. You will get the most use out of something that gives you enough stability and handling to be comfortable while being efficient enough to allow you to reach the target areas with enough energy to fish and return to shore later. The Raptor offers an extremely stable ride but it's still fast and efficient enough to put in some serious miles.
