Anyone have a good solution to better secure the igloo type cooler lids from breaking the cheap strap that keeps lid from flopping all the way back and ripping out hinges? I know someone will suggest a yeti or something but I'm looking to prolong this 150 qrt cooler.
Thanks for any suggestions or pics _________________ Take a kid fishing, best investment for them and our future of fishing. |

I took some 500lb steel cable from my shark tackle and made two lid stops. Secured them with a few stainless screws and it was good to go.
I eventually replaced the plastic hinges with stainless door hinges from Ace.
It looks horrible but works great. |

Right on the money. Did all that plus took old inter-tube, cut a square out of it, to make a latch.
The new igloo's just are not made as well as in the past. _________________ "I do hunt and I do fish and I do not apologize to anyone that I hunt and fish." - Norman Schwarzkopf |

Once the connection plastic breaks between the hinge top and bottom. Leave these in place and screw a small SS hinge to the outside of these. It will give the screws more meat to grab and hold on to. For the lid catch. If you have a couple of #14 x 7/8" lap screws. Use one in the lid and one in the interior cooler wall. If you happen to have some paracord or 60lb wire leader. Either works great for the shock cordage on the lid. Ill try and post a picture of mine tomorrow. _________________ If you do not seek a solution you are in the wrong situation. |

I have great success fashioning both hinges and closure "snaps" out of rubber inter-tube.
I use this same material (overlapping closure design) on my wooden bait box. Very easy to slide hand in and out of box, and it closes automatically. _________________

You might do what I have done on my hatch lids on my boat. Acquire some nylon tape or strap from West Marine about the some width, as the plastic strap which is broken on your cooler, and replace them. The West Marine nylon strap is a flat woven material which has no memory like the Igloo product and is much stronger, flexible, and durable, and it is cheap. I know, cheap and WM don't go together, but in this case it is!
Thought I would add, just cut them to length, melt the ends with heat, punch a hole where needed, and you are good to go! They will outlast any cooler, including a YETI! |

Can any of you that have photos of your solutions post some pictures? |

| My latch is broken and I've been thinking about velcro but haven't gone and looked at the velcro tape and put the idea together. |

I used weed eater line, crimps, and swivels I had laying around the garage to make replacement straps. I made them just long enough to prevent the lid from opening past 90 degrees. 2 of them are used per cooler for extra support, all my coolers are rigged this way.
As far as securing the lid to the cooler, for my kayak cooler I used a strap and buckle from an old life jacket and secured it to the cooler with a stainless fender washer and pop rivet.
I believe Walmart and academy sells the straps and buckles for a couple of bucks in the camping dept.
If you don't have access to a rivet gun stainless screws and fender washers should work. Also for a 150 qt cooler, i'd probably secure the lid with 2 buckled straps.
Hope this helps.

| If using weed eater string or ss cable, you can ad a egg sinker to keep lid shut and strap out of the way of cooler lid. |

For replacement hinges I have been using the brass hinges from Lowes. If you take one of your broken hinges and look, there is one of the brass ones that is nearly an exact match. It's close enough that you can use the same mounting holes and just angle the screws a little bit and they are only $3 for a pair. I put some marine goop on the screws before I put them in. Also, as already mentioned, a spacer may be needed to get the hinges to line up smoothly without putting them in a bind. I think someone mentioned using the old broken hinges as spacers.
For latches I have been using the Igloo Hybrid Stainless latches. Its only a couple bucks more than the plastic replacements but they have a stainless hinge built in. They are a little harder to find than the plastic ones. I have never seen them in a store around here only on the net. Amazon normally has the best price on them. Right now they are $10.99 but the last ones I got from Amazon were $7.99. As you know, the prices on Amazon always go up and down.

Skipper had a great FBIT (Flour Bluff Institute of Technology) solution for the broken hinges. He suggested cutting the tongues out of an old pair of shoes and screwing them in place _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |
