Had company here for the weekend and fishing was of course on the schedule.
Had a UglyStick spinning rod that I decided to fit up with a new inexpensive spinning reel for the guests to use.
Academy has a Shimano Sienna 4000FD in a plastic blister pack for $29.00.
After using it I am impressed with what $29.00 can buy.
It is well balanced and casts good with 17lb mono line on it.
The drag worked just fine with the redfish.
I know a more expensive reel will last longer but it would need to last four times or more longer and stay in like new condition to match buying one of these Shimano reels every time one wore out.
I think I am reconsidering the true value of a $150 reel.
Any opinions? _________________ Willee 361-563-1303 |

I like stradics.... I have completely stripped the gears on the 29.99 reals thats why I don't use them. It's all about choice and what you like and can afford. I look at my rod and reel almost like a gun just a different type of hunting. You don't have to have the best but you want good and durable. Just my opinion but what do I know? _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I've gone several years without buying a reel. I have 4 of the Stradic Ci4. Granted I drop them off once a year at Roys for around 30-45 bucks. I start dropping them off in September (one at a time.)
I have the solstace for guests on the boat. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

| I've been using a Symeter my son gave me for about 3 seasons of at least 1x/week use, and it is a joy. He uses a Sonora and it has also held up well. My youngest son left a little $29.00 Shimano at the house. I put some super line on it, put on a light action rod, and it is great for 1/8 oz. jigs on the pier. I doubt it will last 2 seasons, but it really feels like a more expensive reel. That's why I like the Shimanos. They always feel like you spent more than you did. I have Penns and they are rugged, but at the lower price points, they are not as fine tuned. I have used Quantum for fresh water but no experience in salt. As for baitcasters, I have two old A. Garcias I wouldn't trade for anything. My $0.02. |

My dad and i have been fishing with a guide for over 10 years in the Rockport area and he uses the Shimano Sienna 2500 for as long as I can remember. For the price, they handle big fish well and are light. And if you ever needed to replace them it does not hurt you wallet. Great reel for sure _________________ Work is for people who dont know how to fish! |

Yes! I've fished with that guide he uses a Skeeter boat? He takes out troops from NASCC. some generous fellow pays for the trips starting in the summer through Sept. Not sure if he still does it but I went on several and those Sienna's are great for targeting trout under croaker you can feel the action as the trout sucks up the croaker. We did manage to hook up a decent Jack with the Sienna and it did the job. I ended switching my spinners to sienna's easy to maintain and the price is just right. _________________ "Our houses are protected by the good Lord and a gun And you might meet'em both if you show up here not welcome son" -Josh Thompson |
