My youngest daughter, 21 , just got to go fishing offshore with a college friend who had won a guided trip. So these two girls get taken fishing , fine boat, best of equipment, to the best places , by very experienced guides. My kid is an athlete who has spent most of her growing up on the ball fields from t-ball to college and still is. When they were little, like any good daddy, I took her and her siblings with me when we camped on the national seashore, I fished, they played in the dunes, chased sand crabs, caught ghost shrimp for me, i.e. she knew what a reel looks like, I couldnt tell you if she knew how to cast one anymore. And of course, her and her friend sacked them up on their fishing trip. A couple days ago, after this one trip, she tells me , "I have decided that fishing is what I love -after I graduate, I am going to hang out in towns like Port OConner, Port Aransas, fish, meet fisherman."
Should I tell her that every trip doesnt end up with a full ice chest, that every time you go, there isnt professional fishing guides to tell you where to cast, what kind of bait , what depth the fish are at, etc ? That some trips , the water is full of seaweed, or the wind is blowing too much or too little, hard heads are the only fish around, every where you look is crowded with clowns, etc, etc. Naah.

She sounds like she is going to make some young fishing dude the best wife he could ever have dreamed of.

I had the same thing happen with my ex girlfriend. The first time I went out with her I got her a limit of big black drum while kayak fishing. It was crazy. We were int he middle of a big school of drum just catching one after the other. I told her that day "this isn't normal, so please don't expect this each time we go". I told her "some days are good, some aren't". She really loved to fish even when we weren't catching so telling her about the feast or famine sport of fishing didn't harm her passion for it. It's always fun when you're slamming them, but grinding out a few fish for dinner can still be a good experience if you enjoy fishing enough.

I think she will enjoy fishing as long as she is around people who love it.

Tell her. I presume that you have been open and honest with her all of her life....why stop now? Did you always tell her that she would get a hit, never make a mistake, or never have a bad game? Just give her a little bit of perspective.

There's definitely nothing wrong with living the "Salty Life" but just let her know that it's always good to make sure she's 100% sure that it's fishing that she truly loves. Bc I have seen a lot of women in this industry go crazy bc their husband was always on the water.

As my daughter starts her journey into college and our fishing trips together are far less if any. Growing up she thought that we were Just Fishing. It was more than that.

Sit back and listen to Trace Adkins - Just Fishing and it'll put it into perspective.

She's a smart kid - part of this was tongue-in-cheek - and I teased her about what to expect on her next trip. What I remember from my first trip offshore were the intense colors - the bluest blue of the water - and seeing a silver flash down deep. Those were the same things she talked about first - how intense the colors were, seeing the flash of a nice fish coming up.

And she has struck out a time or two.... and lost games - she will understand the big picture. Its fun watching them grow up - and seeing my kids appreciate the outdoors.
