Nice catch! We're the spade fish speared or caught on rod and reel? _________________ Everyone must believe in something. I believe I'll go fishing. - Henry David Thoreau |

A snapper caught inside state waters. In Texas you can fish for snapper year round. In federal waters you get just a few days a year. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Wait... I can STILL fish for Red Snapper inside Texas waters???
OK, what charter boat service would you recommend to your own mother and/or father for Red Snapper inside Texas waters?
Edit - cancel that request. I've checked out a few charter rates and I am just not in that league right now.

How would one go about preparing some spade fish? _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

We used to catch them out of Galveston/ Freeport a lot when I was a kid. It's a very delicate white meat. My favorite was egg wash>light cornmeal batter> flash fry about 30 sec per side. Do not overlook they get a rubbery texture.
Still would like to know if you caught them on rod and reel what you used. I've caught some using torn pieces of ice bags and a smal split shot. I've always heard they eat jellyfish... Hence the ice bag. I know you could crush them with a spear. Taking some kids next weekend that would get a kick out of those if I could just figure out a more productive way of catching them. _________________ Everyone must believe in something. We were using small pieces of ribbon fish when the kings werent biting. And that seemed to work ok. I bet shrimp would work. We have them close enough to the kayak you probably could just net all you wanted at the close rigs. _________________ Great captains, the stuff of legend, are made not by what they have caught, but by what they have given back. |

Heck man, you just need two boats! It IS a dilemma for sure in an area like yours and living that close to the LM, but ALSO with fairly quick and easy access to the gulf. If I lived on the coast anywhere that had two such choices and could only swing one boat, it would HAVE to be a panga in the 20' range. Won't handle quite as shallow water as a dedicated flats boat but still very doable, and handles offshore conditions better than "Bay Boats", with a HUGE savings in fuel each trip!!! _________________ Dave
