|
|
If you missed it last night, Shark Week on Discovery Channel had a special "Monster Mako" that featured some of our local shark experts from the Harte Research Institute, studying mako shark behavior. The footage on the episode is pretty freaking awesome.
There is a public showing of the episode at the Harte Research Institute tonight, followed by a Q&A with Dr. Greg Stunz. 6pm on TAMUCC campus, HRI conference room 127. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

Howdy!
Started watching it, but stopped shortly after the ROV "got stuck". Just did not seem genuine to me, similar to a lot of "reality" tv shows. Come to think of it, kind of reminds me of those mermaid and megalodon shows Discovery put on not too long ago (fictional stories presented as non-fiction). Guess they have to ham it up to make it interesting for the general public.
They showed the first mako a couple times before the ROV was deployed, then acted all surprised when it swam in the ROV's camera view. Also, showed the shark and ROV from multiple angles before and after ROV deployment and "rescue" so someone was obviously in the water with the shark throughout the process.
Maybe it was the editing...or that I'm a MARBie from TAMUG. |

I'm thinking the latter Clint
Of course it was hammed up. The things that happened during the trips were of course real, DC just likes to shine it up it with music and suspense. But the science behind it is real (including the data collected from the shark eye), and lets be honest, real science is a huge step up for Discovery Channel. But sheesh, saying it was like the Megalodon and Mermaid shows....yikes man...you're a tough critic!!!! Tough to please you TAMUG folks. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

I saw the episode and I didn't think the camera that was being pulled looked like the camera being deployed. When they would show the underwater footage it had streamers?
The information was good but it didn't keep me watching. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

I gotta check again. They did have a few "animated map" shots showing roughly where the two different boat teams were in the gulf, relative to one another, but I don't think there were specifics about the rigs. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |
