I've got a trip coming up August 13-16, and I'll be staying at a condo. I haven't decided which one yet, but I wanted to get some local opinions on the areas before I decide. I plan on doing a lot of fishing off the dock at whatever place I'm staying (no boat).
I've put in links to maps of the two areas below. Which would you choose and why?
As far as techniques go, freelining live shrimp the best approach? I've also had good luck in the past using 1/4 of a crab for black drum. Should I try that in the canals this trip?
I'm looking to catch trout reds, blacks, anything that would be decent table fair and good size.
Another point...the dock at the condo by JFK is very small with no seating and no shade. The dock at the second place is huge with a roof set back from the edge and seating. Lastly, there will be at least 2 adults and one child fishing.
I should also mention I've very interested in crabbing while I'm there, if one spot looks better for crabs let me know!
Thanks for the help!

I'd take either one of those. The Aloha Drive one should be good with that close proximity to the Laguna and Packery.
The Leeward location is within walking distance of the South Jetty at Packery. I don't know what the light fishing is like on Lake Padre but I would assume it could be good. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

I stayed on Aruba by the Leeward location and fished the lake. We caught Red fish, a trout and lots of hard heads.
Would stay there again in a heartbeat. |

As for crabbing ... I would think that anywhere close to a place where people clean fish would be a good crab spot. _________________ Willee 361-563-1303 |

So my guess was that the location near the channel would be better fishing, but could I be wrong about that?
Has anyone fished that area before? I'm curious about depth and current strength |

| The Aloha location is a very old set of condos, and the maintenance is not always up to par, plus the fishing in the area immediately behind them is non existent, from my experience. We have stayed there three times over the years and the last time a few years ago was the worst. The second location over by packery channel is probably newer, and may be in better shape. In either case, I would think you are going to need to travel to another site for successful bank, jetty, or wade fishing. |

| Padre Escape rental service is great. I would look for a condo that is closest to JFK and something preferrably on the edge of the canal to fish those flats. The canals hold fish, but can also be trashy. |

| Thanks for the replies...we are going with the Padre Escapes rental on Lake Padre. We don't have many options available there, so we will be in the general area that I originally posted. I would love to find nearby flats to wade fish |

| You will have several areas quickly accessible to you, the surf, Packery Channel off the bridge to Port A, Packery Channel jetties, and a large area behind the Methodist Church on the way to Port A. You might resource the book Tyler makes available on this site for wading and kayaking in the Corpus area. |
