King Mackerel - Vermillion Snapper - is that all on the same trip or different trips, and,
When are we going? |

yes Cobia, and yes they can all be targeted on the same trips. Just look at the sites for the major fleets out of port A and check out the pictures and reports. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

I have checked out the websites for the party boats but the description of their trips are kinda vague. |

The big thing to me concerning variety is what you're fishing with. If you use nothing but the cut squid provided on the trips, you'll catch mostly snapper of different types, triggerfish, etc. Understand that I said MOSTLY, because I caught a ling and a hammerhead on my first trip usung cut squid, and they do of course catch grouper and other such things that way.
To target larger fish and/or save yourself the time wasted reeling in smaller stuff, vertical jigging and larger live baits work REALLY WELL, and are well worth the extra work and possibly fewer fish coming over the rail. _________________ Dave

I'm not interested in catching sharks of any size or species, at all - I just have less than zero interest in sharks.
I did not know that squid is the bait they use on the party boats - thank for that info!
It looks like for sure I am going to miss any chance at Red Snapper because a few projects rolled in that I have to finish by the 18th.
If I could catch a few Vermillion Snapper or a Cobia I'd be way happy with that! |

The Beeliners (Vermillion snapper) eat the squid up. One the first CCFF offshore trip I was dropping to a count of 30, and just about immediately hooked of with BIG Beeliners, bigger than I've seen on any party boat since. Most of the others were dropping to the bottom. I ended that trip with 13 big ones. If I'd been using my own gear, I dare say it would have been at least twice that number or whatever the limit was then, if any.
I have less than zero interest in sharks myself, just a wastes of my fishing time. _________________ Dave

When I see a shark come up to the side of a boat on my line, I just want to shoot it.
I was going to buy a Penn Squall SQL30 but I decided to just re-spool my SQL20 with 50-lb Maxima Braid8 - damned near 500-yards of braid on that thing now! On a 7-ft medium heavy graphite boat rod I've had for a while.
That should oughta cover almost anything I catch from a party boat, ya think? |

Some do, some don't and some do begrudgingly. Yes, that last happened to me in Ft. Pierce Florida! The gal on the phone said "No", but then on the boat, I saw people using their own gear and spectra braid. I asked later what gives and was told, "well, you can use is, but we prefer you don't"!!!!
Best bet is to call and ask directly, as always.
As to your reel of choice: I saw 20 lbs drag max. That's pretty darn light for fighting big fish on a party boat. 500 yards of line is useless if you don't have the drag to stop a fish before half the boat is tangled with you, and 25% (recommended max drag setting:line test) is only 12.5 lbs with 50lb test, so you're still a little undergunned for big stuff on a party boat, IMHO. _________________ Dave

You guy's must have MONSTER fish down here?
I've seen a few fish I would consider big, in the photos on the party boat websites, but nothing intimidating! I figured that 20-lbs of drag on 50-lb line would be nice for putting the brakes on anything super-gigantic that might hang itself on my hook -- I know about the 25% drag rule but I like to be able to tighten it down if things get spooky.
I've caught 20-lb Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado on the same exact rod, with a Penn Jigmaster and 30-lb mono on long-range boats out of San Diego?
I wonder what is up with the braid-hate? I hope I didn't just waste $125 on braided line. |
