Im thinking about yakin around the lights one of these days. I would like to know how yall feel about people coming up to your lights. _________________ "When times are tough,

| If I'm not at my light I don't mind people using it. However, I have had people say that the water is a public way so they refused to move. In that case I just turned off the light and no one was able to fish. Comes down to one of the other threads, COURTESY! |

Well, the water IS public, but as you say, a little courtesy goes a long way. After all who's paying the electric bills? Then again, if someone has their docks lights on all the time no matter what as so many seem to, but comes out and turns them off because someone happens to be fishing there, that seems a tad on the crass side to me. _________________ Dave

that's not what I said. I was sitting fishing at my light when they pulled up and anchored. I told him I was fishing on my lights and if they would move and they refused. That's when I turn the lights off. |

I don't own water front property but we do rent a house with a light along Packery channel. I'm with Zia, if we turn on the lights and stay away from it till the fish starting feeding, I don't really mind someone fishing there. Once we are fishing, it really hacks me off when somebody anchors at the lights edge and cast into the area we are fishing. I'd rather turn the light off till they leave and turn it back on and fish again once its clear.
I've fished that area in the past from my boat and when I see people fishing the dock I anchor way off the main lighted area and at best I fish the edge of the light. I do not cast into the main lighted area. |

Courtesy goes a long way. I don't mind anyone fishing my light as long as they are considerate.
Since you asked, here are some things to consider when fishing people's lights:
If the owner is fishing the light, please go to another light; if the owner comes out to fish the light while you are there, please move on to a different, unused light.
Please don't throw weights; the lights are just bare bulbs that can be broken when hit by a weight.
If you snag the light line with a hook, please immediately cut the line rather than dragging the light around.. and/or pulling so hard that the hook bites into the insulated wrap, which will short circuit/blow out the light when water seeps into the cord.
Be careful with your casts. It's no fun having to remove hooks/lures from boats, motors, props, decks; it's even less fun to discover the hooks/lures by stepping on them or getting them stuck in your hand when you don't see them first.
Be sure you have your required night lights on. Someone hanging out in a "backyard" with no visible light and/or no visible fishing pole might be mistaken for someone up to no good.....looking for stuff to steal.
Please be aware that sound travels.... People may be sitting on their deck enjoying the quiet night/star gazing. They might get grumpy if they are suddenly forced to listen to loud or vulgar conversations by people fishing their light.
Please, please don't use our decks as trash cans. We don't enjoy picking up crumpled beer cans thrown onto our decks during the night. |

| Good post fishinglady. I've had a number of those things happen. Just recently I pulled my light out to check it and there were four different bottom rigs attached to it. Luckily this time the wire wasn't penetrated as it had been in the past. |

| Going around fishing other people's lights seems kind of creepy to me, sort of like running someone else's trotlines or hunting out of another's stand. Maybe it's the accepted norm to fish other's lights in the canals, but it's not something I'd feel comfortable about doing. |

The reason for rules like the ones posted by fishinglady is because someone has come along and abused everyone of those rules. I agree with everyone of them 100%. I'm sure the list could be longer but those are a good start for those that can read and understand them. If the shoe fits...... _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I did a post a few days ago about fishing " courtesy ". Seems to me
That word in general has lost it's definition in today's society |

| I used to not care at all until I caught several "fishermen" on my deck going through my boats and storage looking for stuff to steal . Now the lights stay off Friday and Saturday so nobody has an excuse to be near my deck. If a light owner seems like a jerk about you fishing their lights it's probably they have been screwed over. |

I use to fish the lights a lot. Use to live on a canal as well.
-Keep yourself lit up. Dont be like that one tuber in the canals that doesnt have ANY lights on himself.
-Your voice caries so be quiet for those trying to sleep.
-If yo have a headlight then leave it off unless you are looking at your kayak. Its easy to forget its on and you accidentally flash through someones window.
-If people are fishing it or sitting outside just keep your distance. Ask them if you can fish the lights. I've never had anyone say, no. They always tell me to go ahead and fish and usually ask for a report when I see em around.
- Try not to get all up on someones dock. Dont be that guy that has to cast underneath the dock and boat because he thinks thats where they are. If you get a lure stuck and you cant get it back then just cut it. You took the risk on the cast and you lost it.
-If you hook the light just cut your line. We had a few people break our lights because they wanted their expensive speck rigs back.
-If there is a dog barking at you then just go to another light. Itll wake everyone up and everyone will be grumpy. _________________

| Are these dock lights y'all are talking about or some kind of light you put in the water to attract fish? |

Yes they do attract fish, and Tino those that do all that stupid stuff and ruin it for others cannot read what you wrote and if they could they can't comprehend or process it. However you are correct and I agree with you and fishinglady. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |
