|
|
Pumped 12 gallons of "possibly" bad gas from my boat this week. Now what to do with the gas. Gulf Coast Marine says that my local oil recyclers like Auto Zone and O'Reilley's may let me dump it in with their oil The city website says they only take 1 gallon containers. I need to call to confirm that, but I am sure I am not the first person to run into this problem.
Anyone have a recommendation? A legal recommendation...
Thanks |

| I've taken that quantity to the JC Elliott collection center. As long as they have room in their 55gal drums, they should take it. I was in the same position as you....trying to do the right thing, but everyone kept saying 'no'. |

Been too busy to call the city, but will before I leave work today. That 1 gallon rule just does not make sense to me. I imagine there are some boat owners with a lot more than 12 gallons to get rid of at times. Hate to imagine what they might be doing with it...
Thanks |

Called the landfill. Guy said I would have to leave the gas in the containers that the gas is currently in. Unfortunately, the gas is in two portable boat gas tanks. Now I need find a suitable container to leave behind. Don't like the idea of using two old pickle buckets but may have no choice. Guess my next stop will have to be Whataburger to see if they still give away old buckets.....
Who knew it would be so difficult to do the right thing... |

| FYI, called both Autozone and O'Reilly's. Both said no, one said hell no. |

| If its just old and not 1/2 water, and if someone has an old truck (prior to O2 sensors) you could probably mix it in with a fill up of mid grade and get away with it. We used to do that but gas was better quality then and didn't break down so much. Also used it to spark burn piles, but not everyone has piles of pushed up brush laying around. |

Official policy and reality at the landfill don't always line up. The folks that work out there are usually really helpful. I'd just show up and see if they'll let you pour it in the drum....no promises, but it might be easier than running around town trying to find containers. |

pump some into a clear glass container and inspect it....after a few minutes, is there water at the bottom? does it smell completely fouled?
unless it's completely gone, you can put it lawnmowers, as mentioned feed it to old trucks a little at a time, use it in the weedwhacker, etc....
I'm betting it's still usable in something....unless it's tanked, I'm down for a few gallons of it...

I wouldn't put it in anything 2 stroke. I don't know if there's any science to that, but nothing likes to find a reason not to start like a small 2 stroke motor. |

I totally agree with dirtylove, but in my experience I have put it in my Chevrolet truck and burned it with a more than half full tank, and in a case of 7 year old car gas I took it to an oil change place and they put it in their waste oil tanks for no charge. |
