Just needing a little information to get started. In a couple of weeks I will be traveling down to corpus with the family for a weekend get-a-way. My wife and I are both in the education field and need a little break for a couple of days. I have been reading some of the posts on this forum and a lot of people post some great information. I have never fished offshore but I am wanting to take my boat out there to try it out if the weather permits. I am wanting to try to catch some kings and some Spanish mackerel. I think I have all of the tackle I need to go after them. Couple of questions because like I said, I am not familiar about it but:

1. Can I launch at the packery channel and head out from there to the green water or do I need to go out from somewhere else?

2. Where is a good place to buy ribbon fish to try to troll for kings?

3. I see some scattered reports, are the Spanish and kings around to have a decent chance at catching any?

I truly appreciate any information someone is willing to share and I will definitely let you know how the trip turns out.

sea conditions will be the big factor, even in a big boat.
ribbonfish can be found at most bait shops.
there is an old artificial bait called hooties that work well on Spanish if you get on a school.

Yes you can launch from Packery Channel and head out into the gulf. There are a few bait stand going towards Packery from Corpus. You can try The Bait Bucket, Red Dot, Cos Way, Billings, Clems, or Marker 37 for ribbon fish. In Port Aransas you will see lots of bait stands as well. I haven't heard of any kings yet but it usually isn't too long from now till they start showing up. I would say it's worth a try. I would also take baits for shark and snapper. Also have something rigged up handy in case you see a ling. Must importantly have a great time with the family! Can't wait for the report!

Thanks for the info. Not sure if I have "ling" tackle. Whats the best to use for them? Sharks from what I remember reading about is just using some cut bait, I think. Don't know about shark tackle much and know nothing about snapper.
Any help on that would be great.

Good luck with the king fishing. On the bait thingy: there's a GREAT lure for Kings, Wahoo, Tuna called a Duster. It's THE go to lure/rig in the Florida panhandle, and yes, you can buy ribbonfish there too, yet most folks still use a Duster/Cigar Minnow combo.

I have been out in my BIL's boat off Destin using Dusters with a frozen Cigar Minnows and absolutely slayed the Kings, and my other BIL caught a 30 lb Wahoo on one! Very Happy

The hooks the come on the prerigged models aren't quality, but it's easy and cheap to buy just the Dusters and your own wire, swivels and hooks and do it yourself.

Lure-wise, just about anything flashy will work for kings. Heavy spoons, jigs, plugs, they all work fine when trolling. Ribbons are good as bait, jigging up small bait around the rigs and tossing it out on a big bobber works too.

Find a rig or some bottom structure and troll around it. Go deeper as the sun gets higher.

You can catch smacks just by hanging around the jetties and tossing small jigs or spoons. I like white or silver. If they are there you'll see them pushing bait around. Use a leader, same for kings.

Snapper, tie off to a rig or sit on one of the Liberty ships and vertical jig or drop bait.

As for Ling, your kingfish rods will work for those, I like to keep one with a feathered jig to toss to any that I see. Never pass by a bouy or piece of floating trash without throwing a jig at it. You'll get tripletail this way too.

As for sharks,I don't go after them, although I will pick one up on a plug every once in a while. They will hit a Gulp bait.

If the weather is poor you can pick up all those species trolling or just anchoring and chunking bait inside the Port Aransas jetties and it's close enough to the marina to go for a burger.
