Paddling offshore is not for everyone. It requires strength and a real sense of awareness. If you feel the call and need some motivation to prep for paddling offshore then this video is for you.

I have SO much fun paddling open water, and making this video reminded me of why I have such a strong affinity for the gulf. Beauty, danger, big fish - it's all out there waiting. I'll see you on the water!

Very true. Love the bay but the big water is something different indeed. Just never know what's going to grab hold.[/quote]

Prof. Salt, love your videos! I go out to bob hall standpipe but that is all that I have done since I go by myself. I would love to get shown the ropes some time and tag along at least for the start of the trip. Doubt my out of shape supple bum could hang with you for the day!

I cant wait!!!!!! I usually just go off to the rig off bob hall, but I hear the MP rigs are way better. Ive never been out to them yet, planning on going as soon as there is a window that cooperates with work.

how far out are the MP rigs? 3 miles or so right?

For kingfish and their playmates, any structure will attract them. BHP standpipe is one of the closest platforms available, and it's very convenient for many of us. MP rigs and all other rigs are good structure as well, but they all hold fish!

People that paddle miles into the gulf are crazy!
I don't have a psych degree, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Smile
Good luck in your endeavors.....

You know, Friday is looking pretty good out of the Port Aransas jetties. A few of us will be looking for trouble out there, if you can get free come join us!

What time? Will you just be hanging around the end of the jetties?

Winds will be around 10mph, but surf looks like 4 feet or so. I plan to launch at the public facility near the ferry landing when there is enough light to be seen. It's a 2 mile paddle to the end of the jetties, but tides should cooperate for us. I plan to work the jetty ends - there should be some kings there somewhere. There are usually fish beyond the rocks near those buoys 1/4 mile off the ends.

If you miss us and paddle out on your own, be really careful around the ends of the jetties. Swirling water can get ugly for kayaks. I hug the rocks until near the end, then go out closer to mid-channel. Keep a watchful eye for traffic - those big ships and barges can't slow down or move out of your way.

Great video! I ran into you once out at the rig down pins. I think it was slow for both of us that day. Maybe I'll see you out there again this year

Thanks. I believe that was around the 5mm rig? We all hit those slow days once in a while, but even a slow day of fishing offshore is still a day offshore!

I went out last fall for the first time south of the BHP, the first yellow rig. I caught a few spadefish and a pomp. What kind of bait/lures do you use to catch kings? I had a great time until I got back to shore and flipped over in the surf. At least I was prepared somewhat. I had everything tied down and my pfd on (the whole time). I ruined my brand new iphone. I had it in a "waterproof" container, but it wasn't quite so waterproof.

Ouch. Sorry about the phone.

I run wire rigs and Ribbonfish most of the time. Everything swimming likes ribbons, so they tend to keep me busy reeling in fish. Here's a video showing how to make wire rigs better than anything you can find at the store (will catch more fish):
