Report from the southernmost freshwater trout fishery in the United States right here in Texas y'all! I've been doing this since 1985 when I first heard about trout being stocked. Today, I ventured out with a new-old school fiberglass rod made with new technology yet designed to retain the soft touch and deep bend of the rods of yesteryear.

The river runs green characteristic of most limestone streams and the trout favor holding in the deep ruts near the bottom>

Well, my computer is running like it was made in 1985, so it's going to take a few reboots to finish this report.

Continued....

The Guadalupe tail water below Canyon Dam supports a variety of aquatic insects. These insects tend to run on the small side and as the trout stay in the stream they will soon become selective to the native food. Today, it took me a few flies before I found one they liked - a size 18 zug bug dead drifted under an indicator.

Captured a sequence of a State stocked rainbow ...

time to come to hand...

Discovered that my phone takes better pictures than the Olympus waterproof camera. I kept my phone in the top vest pocket and risked dropping it. The pics do look good tho.

A bigger trout that merited the net...

There was a period when the sun ducked behind some clouds and the fish came out to play. Had several back to back hookups when it turned on. This last fish picture was the best of the group. Now, the plan was to walk the fish over to the bank while keeping it in the water. I was wearing my salt wade boots with hard rubber soles and was slip-sliding over the slime covered bottom. As luck would have it I busted my supple bum and took a bucket of water down my waders completely soaking me to skivvies. I made it to the bank with the fish still on the line and got the pic. I think it was worth the trouble. What do you think?

Keep in mind, with preparation this pic took just seconds with the fish out of water and was quickly returned. I could have done better by splashing the rock down first. She did swim off strong.

Long story short, something I've learned a long time ago was to always have a dry change of clothes back in the vehicle when using waders. Now dry, warm and ready to drive home...

Absolutely beautiful! Reminds me of Brady Creek. Congratulations on the catch. Those are fat critters!

That is awesome and right here close to home. I might just have to do some research on that. Thanks for the report.

Love Central Texas rivers.
If you get a chance try the San Marcos and Blanco Rivers just up I-35 for panfish and bass, the Blanco River has smallmouth bass and fight better than largemouth pound for pound. Time to break out my fly stuff and shake the rust off its been a long time. (I'm an amateur)
I want to start tying my own flies soon, so need to make space in the cave and get supplied.
