Kite Surfers and Boaters are different! I would chunk one at a kite surfer, not a boater...... well it all depends on the size of the weight! Sucks that it happened though! And it all depends on what the violater actually does! _________________

| About a year ago, I was fishing on the bank of a condo channel in the ULM near the JFK sort of. I had two lines in the water. This boat with 3 or 4 guys barrels out of the channel making a definite wake in the no wake zone and runs my lines over chop, chop. Boy how I wanted to get back at those guys. Not only did they break my lines, but they killed the bite right at that moment. I understand how the bank fisherman can be ticked at boats. Still no excuse to chuck a weight at the boat. |

What is it with the kitesurfers, real a-holes from what I can tell. On more than one occasion I have been the only boat in sight yet they will still pass right by where I'm fishing. The last time I put my arms up and he flips me off...haha like I did something wrong. |

They have to be local. Never had any issues with the kite surfers at BIB and there are tons of them there. _________________

| I had to come to a complete stop in the ICW by bird island. The sail boarders were all over the place and two of them wiped out in the channel. I guess the areas set for them aren't big enough. Have had many drifts cut off by kite boarder wile drifting sulfur island |

it's not just the bank fishermen who get po'd or are the cause of trouble. As a kid/teenager we used to fish a local reservoir and all we could find was a canoe to fish from. Every weekend the same guy in a red and white powerboat would buzz us doing donuts trying to swamp the canoe. Got even finally when I threw a potato sized rock through his windshield. He was PO'd to the max and then sure as can be an hour later here he comes with the Game Warden. We explained that while we could paddle a canoe pretty good, we couldn't chase down a power boat just to throw rocks at him. He ended up with a ticket and was warned off the lake.

Near the Causeway, I haven't had any issues with the crowd around Bird either. |

Boaters thrown towards shore to fish and shore people throw out to fish. Seems if your a human being instead of a total jerk you would know how the fish anyway!
Throwing a solid weight with no hook at a boat is uncalled for. Jealous they don't have a boat or what? Disturbing your fishing?
I have more complaints about the trash left behind by shore fisherman than anything else. I happen to be a shore fisherman and bring a trash bag to pick up as much as I can to help with this problem. It would help if trash cans would be emptied in a timely manner in some areas that have them. |

| Boats cruising thru a channel have very little effect on the fish. I have caught some really nice trout by throwing right behind a boat as it passes by in the Packery. I believe the fish come in to a wake to prey on baitfish that are stunned or disoriented by a boat prop.... |

|
|
I just saw this post as I have been trying to stay away from the forums because of constantly reading about silly stuff like this. But....since I fish the Sailboat Channel from time to time and have kayaked and boated it the last few years I had to ask:
1. Why in the world would you want to cruise down that channel going 35mph +?
2. That area is well known to be popular with both bank fishermen, waders and kayakers because of its rather sheltered waters and easy access.
3. We try to be aware and courteous of bank fishermen and yakers as we navigate in that area as do most other boaters that I see. It is not the widest expanse of water so it makes sense to slow down and navigate around and by others.
Not a big fan of the weight tosser although I can see maybe why he was a little po'ed at your speed and wake creation. Good thing there was not a wader or young kayaker in your way or this might be another story.
Perhaps the gw should have had a talk with you concerning appropriate speed in a pb when around others in tight situations.
Have a Happy New Year and when in the Sailboat Channel....Slow Down!

If there are no-wake signs along this channel, you have a valid point. If there are not no-wake signs, then a captain does not have to slow. Kayakers and wade fishermen shouldnt be in the channel itself. It is not legal to anchor in a channel blocking any boat traffic or causing the boat traffic to divert out of the channel. Water splashing on you or your boat is ZERO excuse to assult somebody with a piece of lead. Your intended victim might just assult you back with their own lead. |
