Pretty weak. While the headline is in the correct tense, restating it from the lead was certainly a cheap copout. In addition, that the surf was high was certainly somebody's opinion. Why not put it in a quote?
Speaking of quotes, there weren't any. |

Quite frankly it seems that half-arsed news is now the norm. And people spread it like a wildfire.... _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |

It's unfortunate that the tournament can't write the articles for these news outlets. The journalist in question may not have the outdoor writer resume needed for article such as this, as evidenced by use of the word "snags", "snagging", and "giant" when referring to a 74" blacktip. This same article also appeared in the SA Express News. No mention of catch and release in the article which is needed when educating a large audience in Houston or San Antonio outside of the angling community. |

The news release on the Sharkathon website which does not clearly identify it is a catch and release tournament.

There are many other tabs on that site with relevant information describing the event's format. Questions could have been asked for more information. Jetty Bandit has it right about "half-arsed" and then appearing "half-arsed" in two newspapers. |

A proper news story is written without bias. As an example, a reporter should not tell the reader a building is tall. Instead, the reporter should tell the reader that the building is a 30-story building. The reader can determine if that is tall or not.
Also, quotes are what build a proper news story. They are what makes the story credible. Otherwise, readers must take the reporter's word for it.
In addition, the headline is used to grap the reader's attention. The lead, which is the first paragraph of the story, should not restate the headline but should offer more information.
Furthermore, when using the inverted pyramid, the most important part of the story should be at the top so that if the news hole is small, the least important information is what is cut off. The news hole for this story must have been small indeed because the information contained in this story is very small. |

| My favorite is when a reporter has interviewed someone that has been "electrocuted". Normally when stuck by lightning. It's very common for a news person to report this. Electrocution is death my electricity the last I checked. |
