Where has mahi girl been, or how is she doing?

Mahi girl did great until she outgrew my tank. The Tx State Aquarium built her a holding tank and offered to come transport her, but I thought she would handle the move easier if I did it. She saw me every day and tolerated me cleaning the tank, feeding her, and working around the tank as needed. She would swim around my arm when I reached into the tank, and wasn't bothered by me. When the lid came off the aquarium as I prepared to move her, she realized something was different and it was like a switch was flipped in that little mind and I couldn't figure out how to turn it back off. The entire slide down hill only took a few seconds, and there was no way to reverse the effects. I tried moving her through the water, the way we might recover a trout or redfish before releasing them, for over twenty minutes. The aquarium director called and suggested I stop touching her and just let her rest on the bottom. The chances were slim, but once in a while a stressed fish will recover if left alone... that didn't work. I paddled out alone and put her back into the gulf, sorry that things didn't turn out better.

I've been less interested in the aquarium since then, but I'll try again. Next year I will be looking for redemption with another Mahi if I can find one.

I think we all like to see new types of fish, and we hardly ever get a glimpse into how Mahis develop into the big fish we love. I wish it was legal to keep others in a tank like kingfish and sails. I seined up a tiny king in the surf once, but since there is a size limit he went right back where I found him.

Thanks for all of your posts, We dont get to visit the ocean as much as we would like, and you and the members on this board sure provide some awesome pics and info.

If you got a research permit you could keep short fish

Mahis are not classified as game fish, so they're ok for the tank. Most of the other creatures the kids find interesting share the same non-game designation, so we can catch them, observe them, and release them when we're ready. The idea was to make it easy and fun to enjoy with the kids. For me that means collecting animals that don't require forms or paperwork.

That said, if you get your paperwork in order, I will gladly read your posts and watch how your game fish grow! Very Happy
