Came down early Sat for a quick trip, uncle's new Parkinson's med seems to be helping so I took him with me, he's really getting a bad case of cabin fever these days.
Launched about 10 out of Packery, Started trolling as soon as we hit the color change. LOTS of weed. No mats, but enough basketball-sized clumps to make it difficult.
Caught my first king trying to shake weed off the ribbonfish in fact, he hit it on the surface, weed and all and went airborne. All kings were within a few hundred yards of the jetty. Smallest was 40". Managed a few skipjacks around a bait ball so i started trolling them. Something hit one of the baits hard enough to break the starboard rod holder. I thought the rod was a goner but it snagged on the railing long enough for me to grab it. Lost the whole ribbon fish rig and side planer.
We limited in about 40 minutes then hit the Bob Hall rigs. Lots of bluefish but no snapper. Picked up a couple of big spadefish for the freezer. Was thinking of heading over to the new reef ship but called it a day when the clouds started closing in.
Sunday we tried the PA jetties, launched in a heavy rain and stayed in a heavy rain. It looked suicidal outside the channel so we stayed close to the rocks on the north side. A surprising number of people on the north jetty in miserable conditions. We were trying for reds but only came up with hardheads and skipjack. Only stayed out three hours, I was getting really paranoid about the traffic. LOTS of fishing boats running flat out in 50' visibility and pretty heavy barge traffic. Again, lots of weed and a pretty much continously running bilge pump due to the rain.
Forecast was 2-4'seas and 10-15 ENE mph winds. That was REALLY wrong. San Jose had 6 rows of breakers showing.
Saw two idiots on jetskis head out thru the jetties and out of sight, they never came back in while we were there. No fishing rods, I guess they just like getting beaten up for fun. |
