Well, I put down a down payment for a 14' 2015 Hobie Pro Angler. They say it should come in mid to late October. In the mean time, I'm trying to gather some accessories I know I'll need.
I need help with the anchor. What anchor works best for our coastal area? I saw some at Academy a while ago. They were the kind that fold up with a twist collar. They didn't look to be of good quality. So, which one do I need? What weight? Do you use any kind of chain on it?
I'd also like to hear as to whether you guys prefer an anchor or a home made pole to stick in the ground. _________________ HighTide

| No question--pole gets my vote. I have used an anchor before I made a pole from PVC and now I dont even know where my anchor is. Poles wont scare the fish as much. |

A push pole can be a pain in the supple bum to get into some of the turf around here. With a kayak like a PA youll catch a lot of wind and that pole wont hold. Get yourself a Bruce claw anchor at west marine. Add a few links of chain to keep the end down and attatch it to a dog leash so its retractable. Stows nicely.
Get some scotty mounts to put on in front of you. With peddles you can troll around and catch fish for days. The front rod holders help with that. _________________

Listen to that guy ^^
But, the red 3 lb folding anchor Academy has for jetskis for $15 (I think) works for our few yaks. We cut the rope off and rig up our own to the bottom and tie with a zip-tie, re-using the float and the padded bag it comes in to keep it from banging around the yak. _________________ JJ |

Wow! We have a push-pole, Bruce Claw Anchor, and an Academy 3 Lb. folding anchor for jet skis.
Anybody else have input? _________________ HighTide

This. Even cheaper than the folding anchors and waaaaay better IMO based on experience.

And congrats on the down payment! I plan on getting a hobie next year, just not sure whether I want the PA or the Outback.... Need to test ride 'em. _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |

That's the same thing we've got except the one for the jetskis have a red paint coating and come with a float and thick padded bag to keep it from rattling around. _________________ JJ |

Made my stake out pole from a fiberglass extending paint pole from Home Depot. Took a metal paint roller and took the roller part off of it and then straightened the 3/8th inch diameter frame to act as a point. Just screws on the end of the pole like a paint roller would have. Voila - cheap effective stake out pole. I have a bruce claw too from Austin Kayak and a drift sock. _________________ Gary J

Aluminum electrical conduit makes a great stakeout pole.
What is the favorite, most comfortable, wear all day life jacket at the moment? I need to get one for kayaking. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

RodandRoll: Good question. I'm gleaning a lot of good information from this thread. _________________ HighTide

I haven't used a pole yet but I do have the marine raider 10 lb anchor, I found that the small claw anchors would not hold when the bottom was really soft and there was a decent current. So far the marine raider holds well just a bit bulky.
I really want a stakeout pole, may have to do a DIY version. |

For a DIY version of a push pole try sch 40 3/4" PVC filled with expanding foam. For the tip, use a 1' piece of dowel small enough to fit in the pipe. Sharpen it and cover with JB weld. Screw it into the pipe.
Consider an anchor trolley, DIY or store bought. Great for positioning the boat in the direction you want. Pad eyes and stainless rings. Real simple. |

| I have a Bruce claw anchor with about 18" of chain and fifty feet of anchor line for bay fishing and another 50' for BTB fishing. I've had them for years and no problems. Buy a good PFD that fix and is comfortable, keep trying them on until you that works best for you. Rent one like your buying and fish out of it and you will see where you want your rod holders. Put on a anchor trolley. They will keep you right with the wind. |
