The Montauk 17 is great when you get a motor that runs. Dry ride and sails perfectly downwind with the bimini top as a sail if the motor quits _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

| I always suggest people get an aluminum first boat cuz you are going to run that thing on every dang oyster bed, crap trap, stickup, sand bar in the Laguna. |

| Bluewaves are the number one selling boat,,,you can get a used one cheap compared to others and as far as the cons every boat has them...My second boat was a 16 foot bluewave with a 70 and we went everywhere in thatthing,,,I eventually moved upto a Mosca adn am still running it. I think the best thing to do is establish your price range and see what comes up first....this is a good time to buy. |

Isn't that why they make those fancy fold down thingy motor mounts that will mount up to 20 hp kickers?? It is just the thing to ensure the big motor doesn't quit. Sort of a Karma thing!! Bad things happen when you are least prepared. Have to admit the Bimini Sail was a classic. _________________ Gary J

I have a 17 Cape Horn for bay/gulf and 24 foot Sea Ark for bays. I even carry a 8 foot Avon in the Sea Ark for really skinny days, and use the Avon (soft hull) off PINS.
The cape Horn is much like a Whaler. Very simple solid boat. I have had it for 15 years and would buy another one, but I will never need to. The Sea Ark is AL and with 150 hp I can run/pole 4 inches ( but I don't ) |

| Blue wave's suck, no need to experience that. I'm not going to suggest what to buy, but that's one to stay away from. |

Knowing what to stay away from, especially from guys who run weekly if not daily is as valuable as recommendations to buy this, or buy that. It's like looking at Ham Radio reviews on Eham.com. People rate radios 1-5 with 5 being the highest. To get a true picture you drop out all the 5's and all the 1's and read the rest, except where all the reviews are 5's and especially when all the reviews are 1's. Then you sit up and take notice, realizing something different is going on with this radio (boat, etc).

Blue Wave Boats...I will take the bait and give you the facts from my personal experience. I used to work at a marina on Canyon Lake. We did a lot of bottom jobs on sailboats and a lot of fiberglass repairs/builds on all types of boats. I learned a lot about how boats were put together and what made some better than others. With that knowledge, I looked at a lot of boats. One really weak spot on many boats is how the center console is secured to the deck...fiberglass or screws. I bought my first boat in 1998. 98 Blue Wave with a 115 Johnson. I ran it, hard, for 16 years. Sold it in March for $9000. Pretty good investment if you ask me. I had over 400 logged days on the water. Over 700 hrs. Vast majority of them in the salt. Went off shore several times. Spent most time in ULM, Baffin and LC. Not sure how fast you want to go; however, I would run mid 40s all day. With a jackplate and Bob's low water pick-up, it will run pretty skinny. Not shallow-sport or majek RFL skinny, but pretty skinny. The boat held up exceptionally. Same with the Johnson looper. I am not sure if Blue Wave builds to the same quality as back then; however, they have an outstanding warranty. Lifetime. Not many manufacturers will do that. Anyhow, I rode with them and I have nothing bad to say about them.

The finish and rigging on carolina skiffs and tracker produced kenner/mako aren't good and I would avoid. Typically if you notice that a certain brand is much cheaper than similar boats there is a reason. There are exceptions to this of course, for instance frontier comes to mind as they are reasonably priced but have a good design and you rarely hear negative things about them. Another brand I'm curious about is the sportsman boats, very well priced but I haven't heard any pros/cons yet.
When you go shopping go Bill Cosby style haha, I remember an episode of the Cosby's he was going to buy a car and intentionally dressed "poor" to help his bargaining. In addition to that you can get in and under the boat yourself to determine how well the boat is put together without ruining nicer clothes.
As far as motors I would be looking at rigs with Suzuki/Yamaha four strokes exclusively but lean towards Suzuki due to Huff Marine in our area. My .02, enjoy whatever you get and be sure to give the trailer a good once over mine has been a real pain for me. |

I have an old Cajun 2100 fishmaster with a 150 Johnson. The boat is heavy but with the tunnel hull runs pretty shallow. Trailering it down to the coast however is a pain because it has a single axle trailer and just feels "heavy". The tires sit right near their weight limit.
That said I have decided my next boat will definitely be welded aluminum. A 21 foot aluminum boat is easy to trailer, and needs much less horsepower for the same performance. I will probably coat the inside with something like Durabak for sound deadening and maintenance purposes. Other than that I will keep the rigging to a minimum. I think it will fit all my bay needs and will be a breeze for maintenance purposes as compared to heavy fiberglass. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!
