Hey yall just a quick question about rod holders on PINS. I'm headed out there next week by myself for a meat haul type of trip. I plan on fishing lures in the first gut and was hoping to nab some whiting with fish bites while I'm working the lures. My question is, would me immediately hammering in a small rod holder for my bottom fish bite rig scare everything away? I remember reading Mr. Sandifer saying that he doesn't even close his truck door very hard when he gets to a spot. Any input/advice? Thanks!

I've heard trout are easily spooked - Tyler and Sandifer could tell you more about that.

As for whiting...I've caught double headers in the wade gut not far from a family of 7, jumping and splashing in the water on Mustang Island.

Like JohnnyReb said....you'll be fine.

I don't use a hammer I just force them in with brute strength Smile Billy is talking about trout in the wade gut getting scared by noise. Try fishing for trout first then pound away!

When this "noise" question came up a year or so ago I had to hold my peace(piece?). I have caught all manner of species of fish in the surf with Grandpa, Grandma, Daddy, Mommy, and 13 kiddies jumping and splashing on one side of me with Bubba blasting his boom box on the other side and Jose Cuervo running his ATV's up and down the middle road behind me. Maybe the fish on PINS are more anti-social than other areas(Freeport, Surfsice, etc.) but I would not think you have anything to worry about. If you are really concerned just "whisper" to those rod holders as you slightly tap them into place with a rubber mallet!
My pvc rod holds have been cut at an angle with a dowel handle inserted thru and thru about 16" or so from the top so I just push them down into the sand. No hammer or "sucking" those things down needed.

Big trout and other big fish are very spooky...that's why they are big, and still swimming. That just makes sence. Sometimes you have to crawl in on your hands and knees in order to nail the big one.

My rod holder is a three inch PVC pipe with the sand end tapered with the edge sharpened. I have a one inch hole drilled through pipe about a foot from the top. I slide a three foot long, one inch PVC pipe through that hole. I seesaw the pipe until it is firmly in the sand.
