I've always done my fishing in Port A from a boat, but I recently sold my boat. I'm looking for someplace I can take my young son where he can catch a few dink trout, etc. I'd love to put a few keepers in the cooler, but him simply getting to catch something is more important. The jetty is always an option, but he's a little young to navigate it. Any other recommendations?

You can wade fish the back side of the island, there is a spot where you can walk out and cast to the ship channel about a half mile south from the ferry landing. Also, not sure if you can drive to the end of Wilson's cut, but there are usually fish there where it opens to the bay.

Per previous post... go to Charlie's Pasture, it is west of the ferry. You can either back ur truck up to the edge of the bulk head or get in and wade the ship channel. You will usually catch a lot of dinks using live shrimp.

If you do go to Charlie's Pasture and wade, keep your eyes open for ships passing in the channel. Could be bad news if you get caught there especially with a kid.

You beat me to the punch!!!! The water sucks out like a mini tsunami as the ships are passing and then comes back in like, well, a mini tsunami! We were fishing that exact spot decades back when i was in 6th grade. We knew there would be a draw down, then a surge when the water came back in, but it came back in high enough that it went maybe 30' further into shore and wiped out our tackle boxes, lawn chairs, ice chests and such! Every thing was floating back out into the channel after that wave and we were scrambling to save it all!!!!!! Shocked

We were all standing in the channel when this happened. It didn't suck us off our feet, but darn close!

Remember, you don't have to walk way out on the jetties to find fish. The surf zone (wade through 3rd gut) is often as good or better than further out, especially on an incoming tide. For a youngster at least, getting into some fast action with croaker, whiting and possibly some trout and reds for a very short walk would be a fun outing! Very Happy If you have some live bait, there's always a good chance of catching some nice flounder in the surf zone, very close to the rocks.

You could also catch some fiddler crabs and fish the channel side for sheepies with almost no walk at all. Catching fiddler crabs is fun for kids!

I just wish that I'd known all this when I was a kid.......... We always slogged WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY out on the jetty to hopefully get into the "big ones", and all I remember catching or hooking were hardheads and some small blacktips! Rolling Eyes Embarassed

You'll be alright wading the ship channel. I waded it when I was very young, you can't wade out that far anyway as it gets deep quick. If you see a low-riding tanker just wade back shallower bc it's full of oil and displaces more water. If the tanker is riding high the water de placement is not so severe. These ships don't just sneak up on you as they are highly visible.

I wasn't implying that fishing the channel was dangerous because of ship traffic. Only relating an experience. Never said anything about that ship "sneaking up on us", we saw it coming as soon as it rounded the bend down past the ferry. Cool Wink

Thanks for all the helpful tips. We ended up going to Charlies Pasture and fished off the bulkhead and pier. Hardly had a bite in 3 hours. May try the jetty tomorrow.

I can wear my kids out with fishbites in the surf on whiting and such. A double drop leader with a pair of 1/0 kahle hooks and a couple ounce spider weight if the surf is not too rough.

you need to fish BHP(the pier) from 11:00 pm-1:00 am with live shrimp and try out several places where the lights shine on the water until you find the fish...or the fish find your shrimp.
