On Monday just off the south jetty at Port A, I had a HUGE dolphin harass a large king I had on. He followed him right to the boat, then when I released him, he grabbed him by the tail and took him down. Also had similar on Wednesday. I have NEVER seen that before, and I've fished here for many years. Have you guys been seeing this? Prof Salt? Just curious.

Yea, I know they're offshore, I've just never seen them harassing a hooked King. They were HUGE, also.

They do that often around the jetties where I guess the dolphins are more prevalent. Haven't seen it as often around the rigs. They also like to steal big jacks and spanish.

I have seen this a bunch. They will wait until you unhook the king and let it go. I know prof. has dealt with the same. I hate dolphins offshore, bunch of jerks.

See them all the time around the jetties. i think it's mainly because of the dolphin watch tours. Some of them get darn big, longer than the yak. I've reached out and put a hand on one before they come so close.

A few years ago we were fishing by the lighthouse. A buddy of mine had just caught a big skip jack and he was holding it over the side of the boat trying to shake it off. Up came a Dolphin right next to the boat and it took the fish right out of his hands just like you see at the Dolphin shows. Scared the heck out of him.

Sorry I'm late to the party.
Those dolphins are a common scourge of kayak fishing around the jetties. I have had them steal them beside the yak, after release, and they have tried to rip them out of my hands when they're in my lap. That makes me nervous. I once punched one on the nose when he stuck his mouth up to take my prize. I was worried he would flip my yak, but he left me alone for a while. What really makes me nervous is the idea if me getting tangled in the hooks as a fish gets stolen. There is potential for disaster there, and I would hate to be the guy on the news who drowned after a dolphin hooked me with my own leader...

I hope I don't come off as a bad guy for punching one, but the potential danger is too real with an animal that size and hooks in the same space with me. I'm sure I didn't hurt him, but was relieved he left me alone to unhook my fish!

The wife, myself and our hounds were fishing by the lighthouse last year and the black lab was looking over the side of the boat at a dolphin, when it rose out of the water with its mouth open about 6 to 8 inches from the dog's nose. The Mrs. (a bona fide bunny loving tree hugger) said if you bite my dog, I WILL punch a dolphin. Still cracks me up to this day. BTW, she had white knuckle death grip on both hounds' collars.

Hey when your life is at jeopardy....all rules go out the window. Punching was a good move...you ever see those shark knives with the co2 cartridges? They are there for a reason.....lol
