haven't done any searching, but that fish has to be old, and probably hasn't spawned in the last many years...like most fish, female, and instead of expending enegry spawing, she grew....
like a big trout...and she was probably on borrowed time from being taken by sharks...
the mid-size fish are the contibutors to the species...
common thru-out nature..
Smile
stringing up 200-400lb marlin does no good.
unless they are males and how do you cull them.

I'm no Marlin expert, but this would disagree with your assessment about size and age. Not looking for an argument here, only trying to educate myself and others. Wink

On the news they said last night that the meat would be cooked and served at the tournament.

That's darn good to hear! How the heck did they keep it fresh? I know that baby wasn't caught 3 miles from the coast! Confused

They have huge insulated bags they put them in then pack it with ice, watched them bring in a big one last year. I can attest the fish was cleaned and the meat distributed to a bunch of folks, my buddy ended up with a couple of 10lb slabs.

I've never eaten that kind of fish and just wondered if it was edible...now I know! Is a Blue Marlin kinda like Swordfish?

Edible yes, good yes, smart........ probably not!!! For the same reason that it's recommended to release large kings and such, a Marlin that large has consumed scads of heavy metals (and other toxins) in it's life because of it's existence at the top of the food chain. These things accumulate in fat, and Marlin flesh has a high fat content, sooooo........

I heard they cut it up and fed everybody lunch at the event. I have a slight problem with the story. I don't think the one old man could of reeled that fish in by himself. When we use to fish for Blue Marlin in The Sea of Cortez, catching on eor two 100 to 200 lbs would wear you out. That fish and it's sixe should of been a good 4 to 5 hour fight not like the guy said it lasted 20 minutes.

Marlin(and a lot of other fish) can definitely fight in different ways. As most on here know, some billfish can fight like a tuna and others can fight like a tarpon and wear out rather quickly. All I can say is heck of a nice fish and congrats. 20 minutes is doable if the fish fights in a certain way and the crew knows what they are doing.
