|
We hit the jetties early saturday morning in anticipation of putting some big sharks on the sand. We took out all the jacks we had in our arsenal along with a few rays, bonito and other prime fresh bait. The first two rods to be ran were a daiwa 80w and the penn 12/0. The weed was still ever so present up close so we spent the next 3 hours clearing the lines. A few other shark fisherman showed up but saw us clearing up the lines and decided to try elsewhere. Around 1130 the weed was completely gone. Not even a speck in site besides what was still rolling in the first two guts. The water was crystal clear with a great tint of blue. We start rigging up the avet 50w, and the 9/0 when the 80w with a full jack starts a nice humble slow roll. We were unsure if the shark was carrying the bait or if it dropped it, so I went ahead and put some pressure with the drag and began to notice that the 2lb weight wasnt stuck and it was fish on. The fish stood no chance on the 80w. As it got close enough and saw the jetty, the chaos began. Running left and right we decided not to run it back to the beach just incase it tries to break off on a rock. At the first glimpse of the shark we knew we had a decent sized shark, and at the second glimpse we realized we had a very fat bull. We pulled it up on the rocks, tagged, dehooked, measured, pic, and released with only minor scratches and a lost pair of costas from my friend Mike jumping in the water to make sure she lived to hit her 8ft mark. She measured 94'' on the dot. She gobbled down a 40in jack leaving me only the head.
I had another big jack left in my arsenal, so I decided to bomb this one out around 900 yards. We got plenty of small runs, and missed hookups throughout the day on the 9s, 6s, and the 50 but it wasnt till 20 minutes before the sun was completely set when we had the biggest, strongest run we have ever seen. I was re running the small shark reels when my lady tells me, "The 80w might of been picked up." Apparently the shark in question had picked up the bait and did the same old fashioned slow roll... and then it stopped. Russel who was the man at the helm of the 80w this time went to tighten it up and put a little more added pressure. As he cooked up the drag, the shark made its first of two runs, dumping line like a freight train. He let it go about 200yards and put the drag 2 clicks from full and still, dumping as if we were playing with a zepco reel. When he put the drag into full, thats when we saw the sheer power of this fish. We didnt realize that the shark wasnt even at full speed until we heard the clicker SHREDDDING line. and after about 200 more yards down the line gets cut. We dont know if it was a tail slap, or it got wrapped up a little in the line or what, but there was no stopping this fish. we had maybe 300 yards left on the spool and there was no stopping it.
We had one more pickup on the 80w mid night taking the bonito and leaving me just a little more than the head. I know we will be back for vengeance. The sound of that clicker, and line peeling will be embedded in my head for a very long time. |

I had the same question. The only time I was to Mansfield I thought rocks were steeper. I was thinking it looked like fish pass. |

| So after further inspection of my line, I realized That bull did some damage when I brought it up on the rocks. I'm going to respool my 80 anyhow. I will not lose my next monster. |

I've never seen anyone run shark lines out there.
Any trout in that little trout pocket everyone fishes there? _________________ JJ |
