In the USA people will tell you it is only good for shark bait. In the rest of the world it is good table fair. Same goes for blue fish here it is trash in south africa they are regulated because of over fishing. Same goes for Carp . I was told that gar is trash , but got to tast it the other day and i thought it was very good. Try it your self and then decide if you like it or not.

Yes, Jack Cravele are good to eat. The meat is really red and bloody, but if you cut out all the maroon meat and soak what's left overnight in just plain water in the refrigerator the meat will lose most of the blood. I like to microwave the fillets and mash the meat with onions, celery, egg and breadcrumbs and fry the patties like you would a salmon cake. Delicious!! _________________ FishLady

I'm not a big fish eater, but if I was I would not bother with jack. Like previously stated, they make great shark bait (I bagged two the other day that just hit the freezer). There are so many other good eating fish out there that jack should not even be considered. However, if I was hungry and trying to feed some people, I would not hesitate to cook that sucker. The regular joke on these boards regarding cooking jacks is as follows: place jack fillets on a wood plank (any board of your choice), season and place on grill, cook till done, remove fillets and place in trash, eat board. That should sum it up for you. Skipjack turn to mush if you try to freeze them so I seriously doubt they would be worth eating not to mention just about everyone down here hates them since they interfere with their trout fishing. Personally, I target them for small shark bait, but you couldn't pay me to eat one. Poor mans tarpon is a very generous description in my opinion. More like trout fishermans pain in the butt.

Fishlady, I've read that in a few google articles. Sounds good, I am going to have to try it at least once.

i got a buddy in clearwater that loves jack. but he will tell you if they are any bigger than your forearm, they arnt very good tasting. when i was younger i tried a ladyfish (skipjack here). the meat wasnt very good for the amount of work. there is a ton of bones. the way i see it ill try anything once. btw i know a guy whos wife loves smoked mullet. it all comes down to personal taste _________________ If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am. |

LMFAO!!! There are so many better tasting fish out there! I just don't get eating Jack! Good tasting jack is more of the exception, not the rule! I'm sure you can fry Dog poo poo and make it taste halfway decent! _________________

What they call "sea mullet" in Florida and the Carolinas is most of the time whiting. I bet there are a few people that may actually be eating "bait" mullet but not many.
