Having moved back to Texas 8 months ago I had to pretty much replace all of my fishing gear. I bought a Penn battle 6000 combo at Bass Pro shops. When I was putting my new rod in my wife's car(i wasn't planning on buying a rod) it broke. No big deal. We were still in the parking lot. I figured it was a fluke as I had barely bent the rod. Exchanged it. Got it home and I loved it. In February I bought another because my wife and kids always managed to end up using it. Last month I bought 2 more, complete with reels. Wednesday I was off shore fishing and was free floating shrimp. In the process of casting I barely tagged a shark rod I had in the rocket launcher. Well I hooked a 18" sheepshead. Just as i flipped the heavy fish into the boat. (i was alone) the rod snapped. I'm not sure if the hitting the shark rod cracked it or if it broke from the weight of the fish but now I am wondering if these rods are just junk. Neither would have been enough to break a 30 dollar throw away. Evil or Very Mad Anyone have experience with them?

ive never used the battle rods. i have all my reels paired up with ugly stiks. the rods are cheap at 69$ and come with a 5 year warranty. i havent had one break on me and put some strain on them. i troll for kings with them if that gives you the level of abuse they can take.

this is good to know you have this problem, im looking for a snapper rod reel and was thinking a battle combo. looks like ill just put a 5k with a tiger lite or something.

That's exactly what I put the reel on. It's definitely more flexible. I love the reels. I got a 6'6" ugly stick tiger for 30-50# braid for 29.99 on Thursday, in Portland. I should have went and bought more rods because they had a bunch sitting out unmarked apparently on clearance. But I was buying a new truck and didn't want to spend a bunch of cash on rods that I don't even have reels for. The battle reels come set up for braid. No need to have a mono backing. The 6000 holds around 300 yards of 50# braid.

Same thing happened to my buddy. He bought a Penn Battle 4000 from the PX and the rod broke when he snagged a branch on the lake. They replaced the rod and it broke again a few weeks later. He gave up and just used an ugly stik for the rod until another buddy ended up losing his rod/reel. So he bought him a new Penn Battle combo which has not had any issues breaking.

Those Penn Battle rods are absolute trash.. I can tell you honestly that every one I've bought (3), have all broke within 3-4 months.. The reels aren't bad but the rods are trash

This is just my opinion but I would stay clear from buying combos. For one, when you are buying a combo you are paying the price for either just the rod or just the reel. For example, like the penn battle combos the reel alone is $99 but you can buy the combo for like $109, so essentially your getting a cheapo rod. Its always best you just buy separate rods and reels, you save a little money in the long run from not having to keep replacing the "combo". Dont get me wrong, Penn makes good rods but they are the ones that are $80+
