that's the "locked and loaded" pose. the part of the snake off the ground is the distance it is capable of striking.
edit...
also notice the fishing rod...
most likely used to encourage the snake into said position. _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

I kind of wonder at the alarm here: it's south Texas, there are rattlesnakes around. No different than hunting or fishing in a swamp up here or doing some rock climbing. There are Cottonmouths aplenty in the former and Timber rattlers aplenty in the latter. It's part of the ecosystem that folks need to take into account when being out there. Being aware of one's surroundings is always the smart play, even in the city!!!! _________________ Dave

lmao yeah I used my rod to show my friends the distance. when I turned the corner on the little trail my foot was about where the second eye is. way too close. . |

I was just showing one of my coworkers that pic and said the same thing. I've run into literally dozens, probably over 100 rattlers while hunting or doing various things outdoors and I've never seen one go into a classic raised strike pose like that. I've seen the low coil pose, seen them takeoff like a bat out of hell, seen them do a cool burst rattle/haul supple bum/burst rattle/haul supple bum type of routine, and seen them just lay there and wait to die.

Last year those of you familiar with Port Occonor, we have a five foot rattle snake swim by us while wade fishing near Sunday Beach! All the night wade fishing I have done I just wonder what all has swam by! |
There's a TON of snakes out that way. If you ever venture into the light house cove area those marshes are filled with Cottonmouths too. _________________ JJ |

This one swam by us by J Hook (fishpond). The next weekend my buddy took someone who could not wade and a rattler kept swimming up to their boat. They would use a rod to push it away and it would swim right back up to boat. _________________ Take a kid fishing, best investment for them and our future of fishing. |

I double-clicked on your pic and it took me to photobucket album. I see Charlie's Bait Camp. We've had lots of great trips out there, but dang you seem to have some good sized trout nailed down in that area. Nice. _________________ JJ |

This bad boy tried to climb in the boat with us this past Sunday while bowfishing up at Lake CC. If my buddy hadn't walked to the back of the boat, we may have never known it was there until it was to late.

| I don't think I have ever seen another snake that's body floated on top of the water like that. |

It's called body mass to length: more buoyant than snakes that are. Slender per length. Cottonmouth's are even fatter per length. _________________ Dave
