I am new here and have the newbie post as well, one thing I've been looking into for my trip is the best line to use. I've searched the site and haven't found much in the way of a whole post dedicated (I'm sure i could have missed it)

One thing i noticed was how expensive braid can be if wanting to put it on multiple reels etc.

What does everyone run? Ill be jetty/pier fishing my plan was to run 20lb braid but I'm considering running mono instead to save costs especially since its only a 3 day trip! (it'll be used again in the future but still)

What is the difference in saltwater vs fresh mono??

Also planning on making my own leaders from flouro, will that withstand some teethy fish or am i better off getting some steel for one of my poles?

Just thought this could be a good place for everyone to post what they run and why they run it! Maybe a good resource for future beginners like myself!

I use 20 pound braid on my reels. However the first quarter to a third I put mono and then top of with braid save on cost plus braid has a tendency to slop if attached directly. Usually have 25 pound flouro or mono on the end of my line. One reason is that when you change lures it is cheaper to retie than braid.

Mono is fine for a couple days. I used mono on my baitcasters for close to a year. It has a tendency to keep backlashing if you get good explosion in your reel braid tends to keep casting well after. I use fins wind tamer and it works great. Roys (a local tackle shop) had it on sale a few weeks ago not sure if they still do. I would use flouro for a leader. The steel leaders put up a pretty big profile in the water. Good luck!

You will come out fine in the long run with braid cost-wise as it will last much longer than mono.

I'd suggest 20 lbs Powerpro braid with about 6' of 20 or 30 lbs monofilament tied with a uni to uni knot- same set up as Ziacatcher. Personally I stay away from fluorocarbon since its a bit harder to tie knots and use mono instead.

Can't stand braid, suffix 12lb-14lb camo. That braid is a real b!tch to get a back lash out of.

I use 8lb test Stren with a 14lb test shock leader no snaps or swivels. 12 lb test for big drum.
