Howdy all. Haven't posted the last few trips I've been cuz not much to say. PINS has been.... interesting.... this year so most of my fishing has been out of the Zodiac offshore filling the freezers with meat and bait.

So, Sharkathon 2013. Excited like a little schoolgirl for months, and it's finally upon us. This is our 5th. I suddenly feel unprepared the day before leaving even though I've got everything in order. What the heck am I forgetting. Can't be anything important (I hope) because the entire garage is somehow Tetris-ed into the Tacoma. I rock my way down Monday eve and hit crazy rain in Mathis. Perfect. Wouldn't be Sharkathon without all my gear soaked, although 4 days early this year. Tuesday Casey made it down and Wednesday we spent collecting non-spectacular fresh bait. Thursday was last errands\fresh ice\gas\etc and off to the check in hours early to get in that line. Casey and I were close to the front and out of the gate, Casey in his truck and me my wife and our dog in mine, early Friday morning at a blazing 20 mph. Man that beach was bumpy. We headed S and watched as the weed got worse. We stopped at a few spots along the way to scan. Finally found one we both liked and time to suck it up, stop mentioning how big the waves were, how strong the current was, how much weed was there and just do it. We knew it would suck but it was gonna suck for all 500 of us so it was still a level playing field. We ground all day Friday. Casey was a machine this year and managed his first Shark about an hour and a half in. 5'9.5" BT. "That's a pretty good one" we thought and I had mentioned at pre-check that a 6'er might get it this year so we were maintaining a "calm excited" for maybe placing.

We both paddled our hearts out that day. I've never picked so much weed off lines but it's Sharkathon! That current probably would have washed us to the check in at BHP faster than we could drive. After grinding all the rest of Friday without a click, we ran 2 rods close to dark for our final try of the day before bed and Saturday mornings repeat performance. After about 30 minutes, Casey thought his weight had come loose and was drifting but after tightening the slack, FISH ON! It used the current but he was able to easily pull in his 2nd of the day, a 5'8" Bull at dusk. SWEET!

We went to bed with random thoughts of possibly placing. We had a fleeting thought of maybe most inches if not, but then we remembered they let Bob in the Tournament Laughing.

Saturday was not like Friday for us so we loaded up Sunday morning and headed to the check in with Casey's 2 Sharks. We had heard of the 6'1" and 6'2" but heard they were caught close together so we were hoping it was the same Shark and the rumor mill had confused one Shark for two. It had not Sad. Fin clips\tags\catch log provided many tickets for Casey and he ended up winning one of the Guy Harvey prints (which is really pretty sweet looking) and the nice set of Boga's. Unfortunately (for us), 3rd place was announced, the 6'1" so we were out. So close. 3.5" from the money.

I really enjoy Sharkathon and the people I meet there. Had a few people recognize the truck and stop and say hi. It was nice meeting you all. It was great seeing all the rigs, some of you have to much money! Haha. There is a lot of brain power in those racks. Even with all the weed and current and waves, I wouldn't trade a day of it. We finally caught fish and got to turn in pics, a first for us. Sharkathon no Shark curse hopefully broken for good. Took us long enough. We are stoked to have gone from being skunked to being in what I can only guess is top 10 and possibly top 5. No money there but we don't care. A dramatic improvement and at the end of the day, what we worry about. Getting better at what we spend our time doing. Anyway, here's some random pics.

Murphy getting his Shark outfit on to walk the line at pre-check (I know, I know....)

My attempt at a free hand Sharkathon logo and Spooky pumpkin to guard our camp. (Lit up with glow sticks)

Just a nice parting shot.

See ya out there.

Congrats on a great tournament. Pug is awesome.
You bring up a good point about speculating on your finish. It would be nice if Sharkathon posted the top 5 or 10 in each category. Even if you only won a bag of circle hooks for 4th, at least you could tell people you finished 4th at Sharkathon and they could see your name and pics on the website. Jim J

You guys were definitely some of the most successful!

I'm very happy to hear that someone who provided fin clips for the Guy Harvey Research Institute got one of the signed pieces of Guy Harvey merchandise!

Hopefully you get rewarded next year with cash!

Awesome Job!
