For some dumb reason I keep buying cheap spinning reels and keep freezing up from the saltwater even after washing off with freshwater. Time to spend some money on a good one. Need suggestions! Will be using it for trout and redfish in the bay.

I have 4 shimano Stradic Ci4 in 2500 series. 3 years no seizing. I drop them off at Roy's for annual cleaning. Smooth and light weight.

Fresca, I started a thread about a week or so ago on Penn Battles. A few people weighed in with there pros/cons of different saltwater spinning reels. Most of the ones discussed were under 150 bucks. Check it out.

Oh and welcome to the board Smile

I have a few Shimano Stradics Some are 15 years old and still working just fine. Its not good for anything with moving parts to be dunked in saltwater and sand I don't care how much it costs or whats it's made out of. I also do my own reel cleaning. Very Happy

I buy Shimano and Okuma spinning reals, lightly rinse them off with fresh water (NEVER SOAK A REEL) and a light spray and rub down with reel spray or WD-40. Wink

Had a shimano Sedona wasn't a huge fan of it. Bought a Penn battle 4000. I love it. Casts smooth drag is smooth retrieval is smooth. It's all personal preference but for a hundred bucks you can't go wrong with it. It will tackle trout and reds but it can handle a more if need be. Spool mine with 12lb mono and it will cast for miles.

Love my Shimanos. I have siennas, sedonas, saharas, and a bait-runner. All are great for their purpose, and relatively durable.

Sienna is bulletproof. It is a great reel to use bait fishing or wading when you know it will get splashed. I neglect my sienna and its still running strong.

Sedona is a good all-around reel.

Even though I have had some problems with my saharas, I still like them (probably shouldn't LOL). Smooth and nice for lure fishing.

Bait-runner is for a very specific type of heavy inshore/ light offshore bait fishing. It is HIGH QUALITY but PRICEY.

Uhhggg!!!
NEVER RINSE YOUR SALWATER REELS IN FRESHWATER!!
Unless of course you like that powdery, white corrosion. The dissimilar metals between salt & fresh water cause this. Buy reels made for saltwater and they don't need rinsing. Just wipe them down with Corrosion X and get them serviced (or better yet learn to do it yourself) every year and they will be fine.
And Shimano would be my choice on reels all the way.

I have four bait-runners they are nice reels but only serve like you said a specific purpose

Another Shimano fan hear. A Stradic and a Sierra. Love them both. I fish with them and put them away. Never rinse or clean them, and have had both for years.

My Sierra on my Jarvis Walker 7' medium light is great for working larger lures in the surf. Man I miss the beach right now...

Check out Akios, I think model 656. Really good. I have about 6 Penns and although on the heavy side, they just keep working.
