Fished 37 late into the night or early morning 1am-5am, depends on perspective. Sleep was eluding me so I figured why not. Rigged my rods with mullet, skipjack and shrimp and set out to catch some nice Reds to stock my freezer. About an hour in my mullet rod starts screaming. To my disappointment I pull in a 25 inch Gafttop. That would be a sign of the what was to come the rest of the night. Cast after cast produce nothing but Gafftop all pushing over 25in. Anyone know if Gafftops run during the month? While I was disappointed in those suckers robbing my bait all night it was nice to bring them in on light and medium tackle. I even threw an artificial that ended up snagging a Gafttop ... go figure. I did, however manage to catch one croaker and a 10in speck in between. I know some people don't mind eating Gafttop but they've never suited me. Until next time.

Whelp! I can help with 37 Wink

Gafttop do seen to run there more then anything sadly. I do have one bag left in my freezer, tastes better then heb catfish to me but to each their own.

Next depends where on the pier you fish at. Last working light on the end of pier you can catch smaller trout (we have got a 24in though right there)

At the very front of the pier (the L)
People are pulling flounder and 35+ reds at night but usually before midnight.
Reds can be caught during the day on the front (30+) we generally loose the reds as soon as the sun goes down. Drum start right after on the backside of the pier.
Also mullet for trout and red
Dead shrimp/ crab flavor fish bite for the drum

^ yup

Get to the end of the pier and fish the backside with fishbites especially with water this high. But dont cast to the corner of the channel keep it a short cast. Youll lose your gear to the oysters.

I can just imagine a prehistoric nomadic version of AcousticTennis, padding around in a dugout canou with long unkempt hair (not much a stretch lol), catching drum on some 3000 BC version of fishbites.

We fished the backside as well. Was able to see the shrimp popping. Threw a weedless, plastic shrimp, and a cocahoe but nothing. Guys at the L said they saw a bull pulled in earlier that night. I imagine that we missed the bite. I've pulled several bulls and oversize black drum at the end of the pier. Clem's always produces come February during the drum run.

The end is good because it gives you options. We generally get there at 3 or so and set up camp and then fish till midnight.
Really hoping I get to go out in a bit. I miss my pier. Wink
