Hit SBH about 8am. Went a mile south of bowl. Lots of people down there, i guess due to pins being closed. Driving a breeze, water about 3 feet or so with lots of chop on the outgoing tide. A slight breeze but not bad. Water would get better as day went on. Threw fishbites and cut mullet until about 11, and were about to leave due to having no luck. Not even a whiting. Nothing. Uncle and his 3 year old get there and convince us to stay a bit, saying some guys on the beach on their way in had a couple slot reds. Get them rigged up and start soaking baits. As we were telling them their efforts were futile, the little ones rod goes off and a red is one its way in. The kiddo stopped reeling when he saw the fish and it got off, but I estimate a decent slod red. We broke out our poles and soaked them for a couple hours more, but no luck. That's fishin... _________________ Fortune favors the brave... |

For me, it was just north of the Fish Pass Jetties, on Thursday afternoon. Hit the beach about 4:30 PM. Lot of mullet running. Talked to a guy already set up and fishing. He told me everything was in the first or second gut. He had hauled in his long rods and took to catching whiting.
I pulled up about 200 yards south of them. Put out two long rods in the first. Caught bait in the wade gut but it was full of grass as well as bait. Had a couple of take downs, but no hook ups, until about 5:45. When they started hitting it was very difficult to fish two rods. Mostly skipjack, in the 25-33 inch range. Did bring in one trout at 22"' and one Spanish Mac at 25". One of the biggest smacks I've ever caught. Also saw a nice, upper slot red, almost swimming the beach. Hardheads came in, as the sun went down, so it was time to go. Left with some good eating and some good future bait. |
