| How do you guys know for sure what kind of shark you have caught? I caught 2 and a half this morning and let a nice bull shark go because I just wasn't SURE what it was until I got back home and could look at pictures. The first shark I had got bitten off by a bigger shark right behind the boat. After that I landed a 29" black tip. Maybe I should have kept that one. He would have probably tasted better. The bull shark was at least 6' and put up a very good fight. Either way. The 2 that were complete got released unharmed. Also, what is the best way to unhook them to be caught later. With out losing a finger? We had a bit of a rodeo for a minute trying to get the hook out of his mouth. All 3 sharks were hooked in the corner of the mouth. |

If it has a black tip keep it, they have a bladder system and don't secrete urine through the skin. let the rest go.

Pretty sure sharks don't urinate through their skin... They piss out of their cloaca. _________________ "I never had an Easter, but I've always had a bunch of speakers" - Beardo |

"Sharks convert urine to urea; a toxic compound which is really converted ammonia. Urea is absorbed in the flesh of the shark and expelled through the skin. When a shark dies this urea is converted back to ammonia. That is why shark meat has a slight ammonia taste and smell. "
..."Sharks, on the other hand, excrete nitrogenous wastes as urea, which is a less toxic compound. A complex biochemical pathway called the ornithine-urea cycle converts ammonia to urea, which can be stored more safely in the blood. In a live shark, ammonia doesn't accumulate because it is quickly converted to urea. When the shark dies, the urea deteriorates back into ammonia, which is why shark meat often tastes and smells of ammonia. Apparently you can remove much of this ammonia by soaking the flesh in freswater or lemon juice before cooking it." _________________ JJ |
