Could anyone help me settle an argument? I stumbled upon this picture online, and several convincing articles about this so called "Blobfish," but the bf feels it is all a ploy. Anyone have any idea if this sad flabby fish exists or is it just a hoax?

very real. I've looked at a couple of preserved specimens at the fish collection at the American Museum of Natural History, and the LSU Zoological Collection. You think they are ugly alive, you should see them in a jar of alcohol - face only a mother could love!

Heard they are a "blob" due to the high pressure enviroment at deep depths that they live in. Any solid skeleton would crush at those depths I am assuming.

That's one ugly fish. Think it's any good to eat? Bet IMS could fry some up!

The blobby gelatinous body is slightly less dense than water at that depth, and serves as an energetically cheap way for it to maintain neutral buoyancy. They do have a bony skeleton believe it or not, just not a whole lot of muscle attached to it. As you can probably tell just by looking at them, they aren't strong swimmers.

Hahaha love the comments. I knew a fish this ugly had to be real. You can't make that stuff up...you'd have to have quite the imagination. Thanks for the replies.
