Looking to purchase a kayak for optimal fishing for the surf. More a beginner than anything, so want something stable (i'm also 250lbs). Trying to be cost effective too.
Suggestions on Brands and sizes? _________________ FISH ON!!! |

| Frenzies do pretty well in the surf. Look at some pics of the reports on here. Most of them have a frenzy for launching bait. |

I would say look for a used Ocean Kayak Malibu 2XL or Cobra FnD.
I'm a 300 pounder and have owned both of those. I found a good deal on a used FnD last year for $450.00, so you just need to keep your eyes peeled. I actually prefer the Malibu 2XL over the FnD for paddling baits (if you plan on doing any of that). If all you are doing is BTB fishing, go with the Cobra. Both are very stable.
I'm sure Hobie's are great too, but I've never fished one.
Good Luck! _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

I think the Malibu 2 is similar or what used to be the Scrambler XT. Billy Sandifer liked his XT for running baits. _________________ Like Corpusfishing.com on Facebook! |

Ive owned a frenzy, scrambler xt, Mal II XL, and a OK Prowler 13 angler. Ive also paddled baits in a Mal II.
Personally, the Scrambler XT is the fastest for running baits. The Mal II is stable, lots of storage, and smooth to paddle. Good in rough stuff, but not as fast (to me). Im looking for a Mal II. The Mal II XL, is nice but its a tank; tough to paddle into any real surf wind, nose is high and catches a breeze. Frenzy, HELL NO, center of gravity to high and the boat is too short, plus no storage if you plan on goin BTB. The Prowler is by far my best boat for the bay, as far as surf, better be less than 2' breakers. Cobras are nice, but if you got money to burn, Hobie or Tuna is a wise option.
As for me I'll stick to my ol' faithful scrambler XT (for now)for running baits, been out in some really sticky situations and came out fine. _________________ B.O.H.I.C.A. buddy |

Great advice! This is my first time running baits and I've only used a kayak once...in a bay. Headed down this weekend and really trying to avoid spending huge $. As much as ill want to run baits Friday night after dark, I'm still a beginner so I have to be smart about it. Probably going to work the gut when the tide is low in hopes that the shark will follow the tide in during the very early hours of the morning. Saturday will be my day to focus on getting BTB. _________________ FISH ON!!! |

My two cents:
Scrambler is a great choice. You can rent them from wind and wave, and if you are in town and need something fast I definitely recommend it.
As for your plans for BTB, have fun and be careful. Call me a pansy, but if I were you I would not go very far at first (i.e. stay literally just beyond the breakers, in view of people on land), especially considering this is only your 2nd time on a yak and first time in the surf. There is plenty of fun to be had and plenty of fish to catch in close without doing a "Professor salt" style 15 mile rig trip. _________________ ...if my boss ever finds this forum I'll be unemployed... |

I have used a Malibu II for years with buddies and liked it. I just bought the XL and use it to run baits in the surf. I had no problems in rough surf the two days I used it down there. It is slow taking off but once going it is going. I feel like I made better time in it then the II when I used it. I did learn though to use the middle seat in the surf as it was easier to handle and get going from there then in the rear seat. _________________ Shane |

I've been paddling an XT for 7 years and I will tell you it's faster than most other kayaks, although a little less stable than the fat bottom kayaks. I'm 6'5" and 235lbs and recently found in my advancing age that the shape of the seat well doesn't accommodate me very well anymore. My legs fall asleep after about 2 hours. It makes going to the rigs tough. I have to constantly move my legs so I don't cramp. I like this kayak. Perhaps a new seat would cure my ails. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know. _________________
