I have never fished for whiting as my target fish. (can't catch one when I want one for bait!!) But I would like to try a meat haul this Sunday with some of my co-workers. (goal is to feed 20 guys, only 4 of us fishing) The tide chart for Sunday doesn't show much differential between high and low. I know low tide is hard head city when fishing Mustang, high tide = whiting, reds, and trout. How will this tide effect the whiting bite? Or should I pull a GT and head to Matty and target croaker?

I find that moving tide is more important than high or low tide. At least that is what I've experienced. Other more knowledgeable surf fishermen might be of more help. Good luck.

Never had a problem catching Whittings. Seems like they are there 24/7, jig head with a piece of fish bites.

18" leader with a 1/2 OZ slip weight and a size 1 kahle hook with pink shrimp bites and a small piece of peeled shrimp and you should catch all you want to mess with.

The fish bites will help keep the hardheads off the line. The wife and kids catch them on speck rigs and spoons quite often as well.

I agree with Zia, moving water is key. In the surf, especially from the beach, a falling tide (until about 30 past low) can produce what you are looking for.

Caught this stringer full in about two hours as the sun started to go down on PINS. I assume it should be the same at Mustang. Starting around 630 Id fish fresh dead shrimp on a 4/0 circle hook with a 2 oz drop weight in the second and even the first gut. Most were caught hitting the second sand bar and letting it fall into the first. Best of luck!
