We have a new addition to our household, but more importantly, a new hunting buddy for me! It is a 13 week old black lab, and I've decided to name him Marlin! I have yet to meet him, which sounds weird, but he apparently is coming from some great breeders. I am full of questions, for anyone that has some lab handling techniques.

First and foremost, do y'all recommend home obedience training through a class, or through personal training with literary guidance? And how difficult do you think it'll be being that it is already 13 weeks old? As far as hunting techniques, I have a lake very close to my house, and will be more than happy to do the training I can, I just don't know what to do! If anyone knows some sort of book, DVD or website that I could use, please let me know. Another question I have, is if y'all think he could be ready for hunting by this winter? I would love to get him out and give some birds hell! Thank y'all for the help,

These dogs are easy to train I have 2 of them that are 9 weeks. And in a few days the know how to sit and fetch. Real good. Just don't try to teach them too much at one time they WILL easily forget. Academy has a dove training aid with a toy and dove scent. I think it's made by Remington.

If your going to hunt with him get the book, " water dog". If you put in the time exercise more patience than you have ever thought possible you can teach him to do everything anyone else can.

Exercise, Consistency, Patience and Repetition and you will both amaze yourselves. Few things in life better than a new puppy.

Congratulations and GOOD LUCK to both of you.

hi . I have three chocolate labs, two are hunting dogs father and son. The father is one of the best dogs for finding birds and retrieving. I used to guide in south Texas. Spend plenty of time with him, I have wings off of quail if you need some for training and some frozen birds. If you would like more info just pm me. have fun with him.

Bill Hillman of Hawkeye Labradors has an excellent DVD for learning to train a puppy. You would benefit from his video a lot, escpecially since it sounds like you have little experience training. I bought it on my most recent pup and his system works like a charm. I don't know the guy, I just really like his training method. SIMPLE!
