For the past few days gulls have been diving for dying bait. Also, I've seen many Perch floating on the edges of the canals. This is going on at the Padre Isles canals. _________________ HighTide

Brown tide, the small fish kill is being caused by very low oxygen levels.

That matches the water behind my house. The stale odor of rot (not overpowering, thankfully), the deep murky brown water, and reddish highlights...nasty. _________________ Why is it that these days sales people seem to be as honest as I am knowledgeable? |

I guess I'm "lucky" as mine hasn't turned red but did find a flounder washed up...no idea if it's from the tide or other cause ...the canals further in the island look nasty _________________

Dont say that Tino. Dead flounder?? I found 6 live and fat ones last night. I went ahead and let TPWD know about the canal situation. |

TPWD reply
Texas Parks and Wildlife - Harmful Algal Blooms Research & Education
We are aware of the discolored water out there. Biologists checked it out last week and found an algal bloom made up of a few nontoxic species that is likely depleting the oxygen in the canals. Very common in the warmer months. Unfortunately, those canals often do not have good water circulation and the blooms hang around longer than out in the open bay. |
