Thanks to directions provided by Speckled Trout, I found a LONG study on brown tide in Baffin Bay/Laguna area done by Dr. Terry Whitledge.
http://www.cbbep.org/publications/virtuallibrary/CCB07.pdf
The key summary can be found on pages 54-58 [which I only discovered after reading through all the previous pages ] |

The green sea grass continues to pile up along Laguna Shores Drive. _________________

Good information in the first 53pages as well. Now I remember why biology was so tuff for me in school. The variables are infinite. With math 3+2 always = 5.
ST, Thanks for he heads up on the data. Any other pointers on where to find any more info would be appreciated. |

| Here is a thought: If high salinity and lack of water exchange are listed as causes of brown tide, which seems to always start in Baffin Bay, why not use the Nine Mile Hole down by the Land Cut as a comparison/control in a study? Doesn't the Nine Mile Hole have high salinity and low water exchange? If it does, and no brown tide starts there, then that would lead one to suppose that perhaps there is something flowing into Baffin Bay that encourages the growth of brown tide. |

maybe it's something in the soil around baffin. There are plenty of naturally occuring minerals and elements in many areas that cause issues.
I haven't read that link yet, but have they narrowed it down to any specific location in baffin where it starts. |

Yes, there is a map in the study which seems to show the center [Cayo del Grullo?] and north eastern [Alazan?] back bays as the prime areas of origin, with the western back bay coming in third. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm not familiar with Baffin Bay.....have avoided it after being advised that the rocks can tear up a boat bottom and lower unit.
The study also says that there are reports/rumors that: "A large amount of land adjacent to the Laguna Madre is alleged to have been changed from grazing to agricultural use prior to the initiation of the brown tide...." The study also says that the brown tide is toxic to larval fish and 'planktonic grazers'. It goes on to say that the Texas brown tide is different from the brown tide found on the East Coast and that it has not yet even been "taxonomically described." |

This is puzzling to me, no one seems to be able to definitively say what it is, where or what it comes from, what event or events drive it and what it does to the bay system.
Why? |

The BT ran me out of my Arroyo City cabin in the early 90s. I couldn't stand looking at that ugly water any longer, and losing the ability to sight cast fish . It's dreadful stuff, and I hope it does not persist for years like that bloom.

That has been my observation. No pecker trout on my last couple trips out. Just slot reds and rat reds with a flattie mixed in. |
