Id been looking for the perfect spot to camp and fish for several days in a row and I still have yet to find it but I pulled the travel trailer out to BIB Wednesday night 4-24-13 and then went back home and got the boat and Stinky then arrived and found out the hard way that you cant park any boats where you can park/camp with a travel trailer even if you are willing to pay for another spot and the opposite applies as well at the boat ramp no travel trailers in the boat ramp parking lot. Oh well I said I guess I'll just park the boat at the ramp then drive back around to travel trailer parking which happens to be right on the water but mooring is not allowed in wind surfing area either. I'm saying all this incase anyone reading this wants to do the same in the future. I knew from fishing near BIB many times that there is a well marked no boat area for the windsurfers just had no idea you could not camp with a boat. Either way I got it done and took everything I could get loose from the boat and locked it up for the night in the truck and needless to say didn't get much sleep wondering if the boat would even be there the next morning, you gotta understand I have never been that far away from my baby overnight like that...Haha ya it's just about that bad. I know some of you are LOL cause you already knew this aren't you. Anyways on to the fishing Stinky and I fished north of BIB and it was miserable as far as the weather goes but of course Stinky managed a to steal the show with the only keeper of the day.
Even though the catching wasn't happening that day the warm travel trailer was enjoyable. So back on the water Friday morning with jello pudding in hand but spoonless as you can see we went directly west Kenedy shoreline south of pure oil and we were catching fish but wouldn't you know it dad didn't land the first keeper Stinky did of course, and boy did I hear about it..
We ended up with 8 specs and 1 flounder from the east shoreline south of BIB which was caught only because my line was out just in case you know while Stinky was playing on the big sand dune and I was eating lunch. One of those times when you are just reeling in cause you're gonna move or leave and there something on the hook...too cool cause I have a really hard time catching flounder so much so that I finally bought a couple lights and gigs. So were back at the ramp cleaning fish and guess who has been fishing all day is still wading around fishing...Stinky and catches 3 hard heads. So I'm just about done and I reach down to get the bucket O water and IBD if the bravest seagull in all the world doesn't rob me of half the flounder I just filleted in a flash all the while I had been waving the blade at them to keepem at bay. I knew I should have brought the scatter gun! So we get back to the trailer and find out most everyone staying there is from out of state so needless to say they got to enjoy the fruits of our labor that day and we enjoyed strawberry ice cream and bed of course.
Day three 4-27-13 and it's my wife Allison's birthday and she's out for a couple days to join the fun so we roll north to marker 37 for sum honey buns, live ones, ice and gogo juice and were off heading south to the landcut with stops here and there to break up the ride but not a lot jumpin on or lines except hard heads. We finally get to the cut and the wind just starts to BLOW so bad it took us like 5 tries to get the anchor to set and still ended up like 15' from the edge of the channel. It wasn't long before we started getting some bites and landed some decent fish but my wife was not having much luck and she was really expecting to do a lot of catching in the often talked about land cut...her first time btw. Well she was disappointed to say the least Stinky throws his out up in the shallow part nowhere near the edge of the channel and as it drifts past the grass line into the channel his cork disappears ever so slowly into the drink....I'm thinking Red and already assuming he was gonna have a fight he couldn't win on his hands but I was wrong...24" spec...HaHa and after we landed it he let his mama know he was the man...LOL too funny
Day 4 and we decided to stay close so after getting supplies we headed north of the JFK almost to CC Bay and hung out in a little channel of the ICW near the power lines and man it was a catch-o-rama (alot of skip jacks though) I assume since the water was moving really well, after a few hours of that it started to slow so Stinky and I decided to get out and wade I was gonna do some pluggin well guess what ended up on Stinky's line too..yep a TTF flats minnow. We managed a few more fish and some hermit crabs for the live well of course and move back south near Pita Island and Stinky is out in the front storage hole while I'm trying my best to get my wife hooked up with a nice Red but he weather that day was weird to say the least, she finally gets the bite and sets the hook drag starts screaming and she's grinning from ear to ear and I'm so relieved u know I did my job...right? Wrong about that time her line goes limp and she reels in all but the hook...damn skip jack, I only realized it after I felt her leader which was toast I can only assume due to the gill plates. So a couple more hours go by all the while u know who is still napping and we have not had another bite and shes about ready to call it quits for the day since she has to go all the way back home and be up for work the next morning...(I was on vacation btw) i'm not a slave driver..lol anyways guess who wakes up and by now we are scouting the shallow waters up close to the shoreline and decides he wants to fish..no hey dad hey mom hows the fishin or nothing, mind you he has a lure on and so I normally don't pay him no mind assuming he cant reel fast enough to get a strike but boy was I wrong. After a couple casts we hear him yell with excitement...HEY I GOT ONE....were both thinking ya right probably grass or he's hung up...nope 26" spec!
Proud parents needless to say but my wife who is very competitive.. in her mind and in reality is totally being out fished by her 4 yr old son and it's really starting to get to her..I love it!
Back at the ramp while cleaning fish Stinky's trying his hand at photography and asking me why they call this place Bird Island...HaHa just look around I said as Im defending our catch.
Don't know if he was aiming at me or the birds either way he did OK and he even figured out how to work the video function so we got a lil BIB documentary footage too. So they left that night and I didn't have much luck the next day but overall a great few days on the water and some even better memories.
I had gotten my wife a guided trip and some Costas for birthday hoping the guide would put her on some nice reds so the next day Tuesday the 30th we met Capt. Chip in Rockport and we were off, I was fairly excited just knowing I wasn't gonna be under any pressure and not to mention I wouldn't have to do anything but fish. Well the morning bite wasn't happening and after several stops and several miles away from where we launched it was like 1pm and it was time to eat some lunch and I jokingly said maybe if we eat the fish will start eating and IBD if the very next cast we both started catching fish and it turned out to be a productive afternoon and mama got her Red or should I say Reds, Reds and more Reds a few nice trout and a black drum.

Looks like you have started the creation of a future fishing guide.
Way to go dad.

Really a great report!
After reading your story, I too am very proud of Stinky! Until Sunday my biggest Spec ever was 26". That boy has a great fishing future!
I plan on having reports just like that too once my girls grow a bit. One will be 2 in July and the other is 2 months old.
Why do yall call him Stinky? I know all about the various odors associated with small humans, but is there a funny story behind it or something?
I've been ripped off by those dern flying rats before too... once while I was cleaning a customer's fish! I felt terrible about it.
Good job Dad! _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

I'm sure you will and I know it's hard to go without them. Nothing in particular as to why I call him Stinky other than the usual odors small children produce, it just stuck and he started answering to it so it's kinda our thing and Thanks. _________________ Don't Sweat the Small Stuff. |
