GOOD, I'm glad to see something happening. Crabtree said this was not a "Punitive measure", Bull$hit, that's what it is plain and simple. The FEDS saying don't you go against us. _________________ Live like you're dying |

| I second that shallowsport! Maybe more artifical reef development within state waters could help out the recreational and maybe even some commercial fishing so we could tell the feds to #$%& off! Just my thoughts and feelings about the matter! <*/)))>< |

The lawsuit is a good first step, but don't get to far ahead of yourself, the Feds are still knocking down the gates to the city.
At the April Gulf Council meeting in Gulfport, a number of red snapper "Regional Management" items came up (Reef Fish Amendment 39), and under Action Item 3 - Apportioning the recreational red snapper quota among regions, the Preferred Alternative (#5) that got selected seems to be a rotten deal for Texas and LA -
Action 3 - Apportioning the recreational red snapper quota among regions
Preferred Alternative 5: To allocate the following percentages to the various states: Florida 38%, Alabama 30%, Mississippi 3%, Louisiana 14%, Texas 15%.
I can see the 3% for MS, given their relatively small Gulf coastline, but 14% and 15% for TX and LA??? Still seems pretty punitive to me!?!?! |

I'm not really sure if I can effectively type my point, but I'll try.
Realistically, most folks fish a handful of times per year offshore, probably once. And, most can not afford to charter a six pack boat. With a 12 day federal season there is no way that all the people who would like to go catch the red snapper will be able to. There aren't enough party boats to take them or charter boats to carry them if they could afford them. There are not enough boats to carry all the folks who would normally go snapper fishing on any given year to take everyone within that 12 day span.
That alone makes me very angry.
Furthermore, giving the citizens a 12 day window to enjoy a resource that belongs to everyone, by God written mandate I might add, is unfair because not everyone can schedule that fishing trip during that particular time period simply because of logistical and financial reasons.
Does this not border on constitutional violation under the premise that this is a federal infringement preventing some citizens from having the ability to enjoy a resource available to everyone? _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |

Not to mention that during that time of year you might be lucky enough to get a couple days of less than 5 foot seas during the week, almost never falls on a weekend. Unless you have a big boat or really big b@ll$ _________________ Live like you're dying |

| From what I understand, the 15% for Texas was proposed BY TEXAS, based on historical landings. That's not a federal mandate. It comes from the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council, which makes proposals to the National Marine Fisheries Service. And TPW's Robin Riechers, director of Coastal Fisheries sits on the council. |

or.... we can say the hell with the feds, and FULLY establish artificial reef areas that can't be destroyed like all the platforms have been by Obama's boy ken salazar.
It's worth the investment to do this in state waters. |

The reefing program in Alabama is the one to model ours after. I've heard they have more Commercially landed snapper than the rest of the coast. Amazing for the short coastline they have. _________________ Live like you're dying |
